If you're gonna be on the grid, at least keep your balls out
of the gears. Fuck the ph # shit.

yeah, i wont give my #

its fear mongering.

it says "most people get fewer than 3 alerts per year"

Are they saying that if i do not give a number they will not
send an email if someone breaks into my account.

it appears they want the cell number for other reasons.

two-step auth is not a conspiracy. the idea is, only you
have your fone#, and if google suspects malarky (i.e. login
is from uzbekistan instead of the UK like usual) it can then
fire off a message to your fone.

you can also get a secureID keyfob etc. to use instead of a
fone, if you'd like. i do suppose they hit you up for your #
without mentioning that -- OMG CONSPIRACY

though i do suppose it makes group accounts a lot more
annoying if you have to bug someone to use their phone to
log in. netflix has started doing this!!

netflix just wants us to sign up for additional accounts;
google finds it easier to ad profile if it's one person per
account.

why don't they email me to say there has been someone from
uzbekistan
in my account, why should i give my phone
Sceptic-of-mega-facts?

The image i posted did not say:

"hey don’t worry if you do not wish to relinquish your
mobile phone number to us (and a few other companies we may
pass the data onto, only in the interest of national
security). We shall of course email you any security
threats, although it may take a while for you to read an
email compared to a txt message.

but Nooo. All they want is the mobile number. And even if
you don't want to give it? The only option is "remind me
later"

OMG conspiracy. wooooo!!

E-mail is enough. If they e-mail you after not letting
someone login (which I've experienced with some sites after
moving from Cairo to Tokyo), then you can confirm things
through e-mail OR, they ALREADY HAVE SECURITY QUESTIONS.
But what if someone hacks your e-mail and knows your whole
life? Oooh, okay- then I guess lucky I had my cell on
record. FUCK! But what if someone hacks my e-mail and
steals my phone? Well, then I guess google needs my bank
information and street address and mother's maiden name, IN
ORDER TO USE A VIDEO SHARING SITE.

Right.

Just have awesome passwords like K98fdjjsK83ddmj8ei, and use
unrelated answers for security questions. Mother's maiden
name? Gargamelzaxon. Best friend from elementary school?
Your Mother. Street and zip I lived on growing up? Ghey
St. 90210.

This keeps the systems working for you, without actually
having to use "real info". These sites never ever need to
know anything about you personally. They are serving you,
and you are serving them, by them being able to show ads.
You don't thank them for their services by rebuilding your
whole life in the Settings section.

hacking my account. Take that CIA

i, too, live in fear of multiple improbable, catastrophic
events befalling me simultaneously, in some sort of
universe-imploding, rocked by a probability drive wake
coincidence. because then, google will have been proven
right.

they're now asking if I want DUBturbo with my burger.

here's a more proper conspiracy !

large-scale assault based on open DNS servers, or so i read in the media.

DNS servers are what resolve (convert) "xltronic.com" from a
human-readable name to a string of numbers that represent
xlt's actual location on the internet. the yellow pages of
the internet.

most people use DNS servers automatically specified by your
ISP. however, some ISPs (verizon fios, for example) muck
with the DNS to further certain agendas. i tried to show my
parents how to use the pirate bay, only to find piratebay.se
failed to resolve on their internet connection! further
prodding revealed that verizon fios had simply sabotaged the
DNS; caused piratebay.se to go to a dud address. you can
type in the numbers manually, but that's annoying. so, i
added a 3rd-party, open DNS server, which made it work
again. hurrah!

however, if you send these servers a spoofed request
(saying, for example, "i'm spamhaus and i want to know what
the numbers are for xltronic.com") they will willingly
comply, sending out gobs of data (hello spamhaus, here is
the huge phonebook of info you asked for!) in exchange for a
lightweight, spoofed request.

end result is some asshole using these open DNS servers to
hammer an anti-spam service, which will likely result in
thousands of open DNS servers closing. go back to your
verizon DNS.... you are ~safe~ there

I doubt Google gives a flying fuck about your phone
number--especially considering that your browsing/viewing
history and demographic information is about a billion times
more valuable to them.
