i don't really get what you're getting at. i guess i'll
explain my thoughts in starting this thread

1978: epic backing band. call and response funk mania. red.
cocaine and grass. loads of fun. stupid and knows it; does
not bother trying to communicate some sort of message

2013: empty stage, invisible DJ, one piano loop throughout.
call with no response. blue. xanax and pharma trash like
ambien. twattish and awkward. stupid and doesn't know it;
delivers hypocritical rant

Ah, ok. Got it, I reacted quite hastily.

My first video is playbacked, no band there to even pretend,
this type of unknowlingly stupid Schlager was popular back
then. And I thought of the Goat thing when I saw that George
Clinton video (not nearly as epic, but it's live, raw,
energetic, a bit crazy), so that aspect of live music is
still alive, only much less massive.

Anyway, my point was that you can't put a year on crap
music, I hope at least that 2013 isn't represented by Kanye
West.

i agree, you can't put a year on crap. but this is
specifically... i dunno, black people music?

lip syncing was shit since day one, but now it's much more
common + more accepted. i just found the wild crazy party
vs. the empty stage really, i dunno, symbolic. and shit.

What do you think of Antony and the Johnsons?

He's got a really distinctive voice and sings really emotive
songs but he loves lip syncing, well watching people lip
synching. It's a separate thing to the pop stars lip
synching, it's more of a 'performance art'. I don't know if
you remember that Darksided nut job on wife swap but there's
someone who lip syncs that really well

i'm not saying it's brainless or that any idiot could lip
sync and satisfy a stadium. however, if you can hop and jump
around and satisfy people while actually singing, then
you're about 10x as talented, as well as more honest (unless
you're billed as a famous... lip syncist?).

it's all a tangent to what i originally posted, about --
neither are lip syncing. more, just.... there's no fun, no
spontaneity to west's bit while funkadelic has it in spades.
lip sync is just one way to suck the fun an spontaneity out
of a performance.

i guess my point is that kanye west needs a backing band and
a crack habit if he ever wants my appreciation.

I think it's funny that you are attempting to covertly
express your approval of cocaine and marijuana as fun party
treats while also voicing your disapproval of
pharmaceutical-grade drugs as garbage all under the guise of
a "music then vs. now" thread.

Just as music grows and evolves so to do the drugs a culture
chooses to enjoy on the weekends. You aren't even a child
of the 70's and yet your drug use has stagnated in that
decade...it's high time you get off your drug high horse and
go doctor shopping for some legitimate prescription highs.

I don't think I've seen a band play that type of music well
with a live band apart from James Brown, he was old when I
saw him but he still had it.

at the risk of seeming a twat -- how about phish?

there are plenty of good jam bands if you dig.

Come on guys, be nice. Epic Mega Trax doesn't post here
often and when he does I find his threads/posts extremely
interesting and informative.

This one made me laugh, it made me cry and I learned a
little more about myself. What do YOUR threads do?

Let's all get all squanged up on typical antipsychotics and
sit around drooling. Old school, maaaaan.

epic makes a good point and is one of the few members I
would let play the boy role if we did a sex.
