Limited Releases

I was thinking about this and it kinda annoys me and seems
pretty hypocritical that labels and artists limit certain
releases, when surely it goes against the whole ethos of
independent music. sure they have more control but why do
this..its not helping people at all. I mean, you've got
aphex banging on about making uncopyrighted music that
anyone can have and then you can't even get hold of AB5. Its
not a problem of demand, this board is testament to the fact
there would be enough people to buy it. If I ever got into
the industry, I'd make sure the fans/listeners got to hear
all the material, no half measures, and get rid of this
elitist atitude.

Ofcourse, I could be talking out my arse, but its better
than inflaming other pointless topics.

if you're talking out of your ass it smells better in here
than it does when most politicians speak from their mouth

i figured the old aesthetic intangible response would look
fashionable

Yeah but AB5 wasnt made for anyone to know about, without
diehard fans you wouldnt know. I mean if you were an artist
like AFX and im sure youd have stuff not to release, you
cant release EVERYTHING youve ever done... so it would
happen. To you.

you have to admit it's pretty shady to actually press
promotional copies of ab5 and not make any available for
sale. why did richard press vinyl copies of ab5 and caustic
window album if he didn't intend to even sell the album? why
couldn't he just give mike, grant, etc. copies on minidisc,
cd-r, DAT, or mp3? i imagine that'd be cheaper than pressing
vinyl, and it doesn't make sense why he'd even name the
albums if it's just gonna be more unreleased material.

It's the same as the sex pistols at their height of 'fame'.
Malcom McClaren picked one of the smallest capacity clubs in
NY for them to play so loads of people would be waitng
outside. Q's forever looks good outside a gig. Hype.

I agree with you B3n, and I think it make's it even worse
that AB5 and Melodies from Mars are some of his best stuff.
It's not like they wern't released because they were crap
(atleast IMO). Come on Richard, officially release them and
rerelease stuff like AB2 with heaps of copies and on CD. You
can buy another tank with the money!!

Most IDM labels have little cash to spend on releases,..so
they only press 1000-2000 pieces. It's still pretty
underground music,..defenitely not mainstream,..so pressing
more, is a risc for small IDM labels. Aphex Twins label
however could afford pressing another batch of cd's
easilly,...maybe they will in the future,..till then the
hype keeps on building on this almost mythological artist.

Cylobs living ín the 1980íes was a limited release, but he

i admire that.

Yeah, that is good

But as plugexpert says, rephlex isn't poor

i despise limited releases too.
i thinks it is partially caused by the artist just starting
out.
most new artist are on small time labels.
but, i think when they get a bigger label and more fans,
that they should rerelease their old stuff.

for instance,
afx - hangable auto bulb ep 1
afx - hangable auto bulb ep 2

afx could make some serious cash off of a rerelease of these
two records.

what about rephlex and vinyl releases ? seems like they
press up loads of the cd version, but less of the vinyl to
me. i mean, stuff like feed me weird things, analogue
bubblebath, goon records etc. are a lot easier to get by on
cd than on vinyl.

at least, that's my impression.

the thing i hate about limited releases is that the record
companies are not taking into account the posibility of new
fans years down the line. most people here are in their late
teens, so would have to have been 11 or 12 when hab1&2 were
released. leaving your only opportunity to get hold of a
legit copy is paying well over the odds for a copy on ebay.
this sucks in my opinion.
