I was thinking of getting some sort of sequencer to mess around with, just wondering if anyone can reccomend something? I want something that can make beats and also basslines/synth would be nice feature if it can hold samples too with a lot of editing control for creating sounds/layers etc maybe i'm asking for too much here! budget is only £300, so i want to find a used item if possible |

Hello Larn, I don't know much about these things but i've been googling lately. If i had the money, I'd most definitely get It looks sweet. It seems most beginners go for the It's small. Supposedly powerful for its price and size. If you search around, you might find some older ones with built in sequencers. Like and . I had a few more links stashed somewhere, but can't find them now. I'm also thinking about getting a dedicated box to play with without spending too much money on it. Good luck and let me know what you decide on. I'll probably get something next month, or a wait a while and get the Groovebox. |

well, monomachine and machinedrum all the way but you won't probably fit in your budget. can highly recommend both korg esx-1 and emx-1. a blast to play with and nice to use live. |

Do you want a specific style of sequencer? Roland xox style, e.g. 808/909? MPC style? I have a Roland SP303 and it's great fun, but possibly not what you want. Check out the Roland/Boss SP series (N.B. although xox numbers these are more like MPC style! confusing) Maybe one of those little Korg boxes or a Yamaha (no experience with either really). I'd use youtube to figure out the workflow/features and see what you like. £300 is not a lot for this sort of thing. Best bet is to already have a computer with cooledit (or audacity if you're into that sort of thing) and buy a SP404. Mess around with the 404 and multitrack it in cooledit. Works a treat. the mpc is more of a sampler, so i think something like the mc-909 is better, i have been checking it out on youtube and it looks cool. also seen those korgs aswell I can't afford anything by elektron, i just want something to have fun with, not too serious about producing music or performing etc i will check out more clips on youtube, thanks |

Get an iPad 2 which is cheap right now since they released the new one, but it's still great. Then get a bunch of cheap and awesome sequencers / synths like the iMS20, iKaossilator, Sunvox, Nanostudio, Beatmaker 2 etc. |

It's funny you said that i was suppose to be getting an ipad 2, but i have this strong craving to jam out some beats and have all the controls laid out in front of me rather than having to switch tabs on a screen or whatever. I know the ipad is more practical though, cus i could take it to work wth me |

the electribes esx1 or emx1 sound like a good option for you... for that price range especially. I've had an esx1 for years and its still fun to mess around with. The fx/parameter looping is pretty cool too. This thing looks dope, though its only a sequencer. no sound engine. |

i find the esx-1 superior to the emx-1 as it's very fun to load random samples and mangle them around live. if you need some synth line you can always send midi from one of the melody channels to your pc with some vst. the emx-1 has the synth engine but it is highly limited and you'll end up using it only as a sequencer and not a synth. |

well i made several midiboxes with the ucapps system and one small sid based synth for my friend. nothing fancy though. i'm not selling it. it's too time consuming making them so i would have to sell them at a very high price. not only is this not affordable but also i'm not comfortable enough with my soldering / engineering skills to make someone else play some important live from a box i made. also - the ucapps system is pretty much a one-man-project and he specifically states that he is giving all this away for free investing a lot of his lifetime into this so any profit making with the system is prohibited. |

So Larn, what have you decided on? Think I might be settling for the MC-505. It's going for a good price, although everything i read should put me off it (completely unintuitive/hard to program/getting something good out of, + shitty LCD screens). The MC-307 looks alright too and I like the sounds I've been hearing from it on Youtube. It's smaller, which is a little bonus. Essentially it should do everything the 505 does, just not as readily at your disposal. It's also marginally cheaper than the 505. Decisions decisions. The MC-09 looks fun too. Apparently a shitty TB-303 wannabe with character and shitty sampling capabilities. Looks fun and the sounds sound okay. Good size too. |

i'm decided on the Korg esx-1. I think if i was going for the roland i would try to get the mc-909, but the 505 still looks ok. yeah it's hard to make a decision, i've been reading SOS articles and i think that's how i made up my mind on the Korg It's weird how much the end price varies so much each week, they seem to go from £200 to over £300 same thing for the mc-505 |

It probably depends on the quality of the machine. I can get a Roland mc-505 for a little less than £300 - which is practically new and unused, with original packaging/cables/manual. From a guy who bought it for his band but soon found out it was too complicated for his needs, so it's just been sitting in the box, untouched. I'm very tempted. |

So I bought the mc-505. I've had it for two days now and would like to og on record here, at xltr0nic.com, to say that it is indeed very cool. So far not unintuitive at all. I was making a beat pattern with within minutes of turning it on. Easily adding bass and melody with the step recorder. The manual is also fairly helpful, though vague in places (just about any modification made to a sound is described as "changing the character of the sound" - no shit! But the manual is not as confusing as I've been led to believe. I also made my first (shit) patch last night. A satisfying feeling. It's a good learning experience so far. Probably not good for a serious musician, although a serious producer could very well squeeze magic out of it. It's good for me. Sampling would have been a nice bonus but this will cetainly do for now. I considered those Korgs but the lack of polyphony put me off. No chords? No thank you. |

Good to see your happy with your purchase! looks like you got right in there, it's nice when you're familiar with an interface and can get something going right out the box. I got the Korg Esx-1 but i bought the smartmedia version which can only hold 128mb of samples, it's not too bad but i can predict that at some point i might want to upgrade. i didn't realise the smartmedia cards were out of production, so it cost me £22 to get a new card ;( I realised right away that the built in sounds and loops are pretty shit, so i've been building up a sample library and getting some loops from my own music. I've not really got anything going yet but i plan to load up some samples soon and have a go. |

I did read through the quick start manual a few times before getting the machine, but I think anyone who isn't electronically challenged should be able to figure something out quite quickly by pressing a few buttons and trying things. MC 505 also has smart media. You should have gone for the Esx 1 SD - would have made your life so much easier. I'm sure you'll figure something out...I'd just connect to the audio in and record like it was going out of fashion. �22 isn't bad - I saw them going for more. Should probably think about picking one up before they fall off the face of the earth. Anyway, next step is getting a midi keyboard for aftertouch, velocity etc... the little pads aren't exactly great for playing on. I didn't use the arpeggiator until yesterday..ha...and well, it's awesome. I can make pseudo acid with the push of a button and the turn of a knob. Woo. |
