[SPOILERS] Saw Ufabulum

offline obara from Utrecht on 2012-03-16 09:03 [#02431084]
Points: 19368 Status: Lurker

an hour and a half must be short if you're drugged...you
need the orb playing for 5 hours - perhaps then you wouldn't
feel cheated in the end

but as you say you can remember the performance and music
was really good - good for you and your mates

any known tracks you can remember ? "come on my selector"
for encore ?

I heard he's turning into the "thinking man's" Skrillex.
Huge drops and poppy melodies.

offline hedphukkerr from mathbotton (United States) on 2012-03-18 18:16 [#02431239]

i gotta be honest, it was underwhelming. the av production
more than anything else, i found i was actually enjoying it
more when i closed my eyes and didn't look at the screen. it
seems like he just had some clips synced to the bar, but
nothing more complex than that, which is really
disappointing. if you're going to be making crazy synced
audiovisual display and you've got mad glitches, i want to
see the video going right with the music, but that really
never happened - it was mostly melody based. the music
actually seemed more complex when i wasn't watching the
display.

also, not a hint of older songs, all new material, which is
cool, but when you go to see an artist who you've been
listening to for over 10 years a little familiarity is
generally appreciated. and i really doubt he's actually
doing anything live beyond pushing play for the next song
and gratuitously asking the crowd to cheer for him some more
- real hard core pandering.

so yeah, it was cool, and technically impressive, and it's
always good to see a bunch of kids getting exposed to
something beyond nero and skrillex. but tom jenkinson has
crawled so far up his own ass that he has absolutely no
connection to anyone else, including the fans watching.

soulless, utterly soulless.

oh, and of course, no live bass.

there were "drops" but nothing i would consider huge. that
may be what he's going for, but if that's the case then tom
j should learn how to produce some bass that actually slaps
you in the face. maybe he could learn something from sonny
moore? hahaha.

I always this but it is odd that you aren't on the stage to
be knocked down for whatever personal gripe. Why aren't you
up there? I wonder?

personal gripe? none of these gripes are personal, unless
you mean that a person is making them.

offline JivverDicker from my house on 2012-03-18 19:05 [#02431246]
Points: 12102 Status: Regular

Yes, a person means personal. You don't need to know
squarepusher or your Hiphy nonsense. It is a personal
opinion. Am I wrong? Did you do a poll of the audience?

offline hedphukkerr from mathbotton (United States) on 2012-03-18 19:11 [#02431248]
Points: 8833 Status: Regular

so are we only allowed to express opinions which the whole
crowd agrees with?

i think you're confusing how a "personal gripe" can be a bad
thing in the argument - generally, that means you're going
for an "ad hominem" attack, not actually addressing any
issues at hand and attacking the person at a personal
level.

i didn't do that. i said squarepusher gave a shitty
performance, and i pointed out some exact reasons why, none
of which were related to tom jenkinson as a person.

music appreciation is all personal preference, and to try to
use that fact to devalue my opinion is straight up retarded.

can't listen to you because of that. It's not a separate ad
hominem discussion.

offline hedphukkerr from mathbotton (United States) on 2012-03-18 19:30 [#02431254]

Exactly.

"An ad hominem (Latin for "to the man" or "to the person"),
short for argumentum ad hominem, is an attempt to negate the
truth of a claim by pointing out a negative characteristic
or belief of the person supporting it.[1] Ad hominem
reasoning is normally described as a logical
fallacy.[2][3][4]"

Ad hominem

Everything that I've heard sounds like Shobaleader Part 2,
more advanced, more dubstep, less R&B.

So far I really like Dark Steering and the first track that
he plays, the one with the techno beat.

ae do it right with lights out and no visuals of any kind.
But to expect an "IDM artist" to player ANY of their older
material is strange... I've never seen it done personally.

i love ae's take on shows - no lights, and fucktons of bass.

most other idm guys yeah, but to be fair last time i saw
squarepusher he played red hot car, come on my selector, i
think dyks and likely other older tracks im not remembering.
i wasn't expecting him to be playing the old tracks tho, i
just wanted to include that in the review cuz it's pretty
telling of the kind of show it is.
