I can only recommend buying a Launchpad, together with a keyboard controller and The Finger, it's quite easy to make some funky drumnbass/jungle. This was my first go: Maybe it has become too easy? |

in my dj setup i have stutteredit, which is very similar to the finger, mapped to one of my launchpad user banks. it's just too easy/fun. i just got it for xmas, they're great! i don't ever have to touch my laptop during sets now :) |

i actually dislike the finger a lot for not having an option to quantize the actions, like the whole setup tim was making. i actually tried to add quantization to it afterwards but i kind of failed. |

I have a launchpad myself Junktion. Its a nice lil bit of kit. It has become too easy , but , with so many now thinking this , it's become much harder to stand out and to make music which is more original / unique. I'd say that in music as a whole , electronic music is probably the easiest genre to make. No bleeding fingers from endless hours of fretboarding....no dislocated shoulders from doing impersonations of animal from the muppets for years. In a lot of cases , its just lay a kick down on each quarter note , lay hats on the alternates , with 2 claps , snares , or clap-snares if they're feelin adventurous. No great shakes. It's become almost instantly accessible , and like currency , if everyone has it , it loses its value. Not sayin this 'bout anyone here , but It's become easy to make "mediocre" dance music. Not everyone is able to harness their imagination and stretch. There are many copycats , but very few innovators |

I would've thought its always been hard to stand out and make original and unique music. maybe there are certain periods when it takes a bit of time for people to catch up with technology, so to speak, and maybe now is one of those periods. thats why we always need innovators, and they will do things with technology that most people couldn't have imagined, ...and then there will be a period when technology catches up people again, an ebb and flow. talent/originality/innovation always stands out against the backdrop of whatever materials were used to realise it |

I've seen this happen. We could have every tool , every vst etc.....at our disposal, But , without imagination , its just a bunch of nothing. So many times , people with little equipment have learned it inside out , because they've not had multiple options and therefore wasted less time faffing around , and they've really maxed their imagination. I'd prefer to hear someone play a casio pt1 with all their imagination , than hear someone with a studio fulla toyz who makes basic meh-usic. when the manufacturers make toys that make it easy , they make us lazy ?? |

no way! if there's one thing i can glean from the readups i've seen from this year's namm, interaction with your hardware is only getting more and more intuitive, which breeds creativity imo. tools like the launchpad and my mpd's have completely changed the way i work with electronic music. before, if i had a musical idea i wanted to sketch down, i'd just have to sit down and click around with a mouse and keyboard in a sequencer. now, i just play 16 bars of drum patterns on my mpd, chop em up, and resequence it with the launchpad in one quarter of the time. the distance between your musical ideas and your computer is getting smaller and smaller! |
