Digital: A Love Story was excellent as well if you haven't
played it. Christine Love is hell of cool.

Sure if you like big dumb clunky games I suppose.
(nothing against big dumb clunky games they're cool
sometimes)

No I haven't played it actually :)
I'm just going by what I've heard + it's Bethesda and that's
kind of Bethesda's thing.

Arkham City is definitely more system intensive than Skyrim
(which is using a souped up fallout 3 engine).

Really? I can play Arkham City, but Skyrim just won't give.
I mean, I can start a game, but then it's just a slideshow.

(I'm not complaining, btw, the problem is completely on my
end - my PC really is terrible. I just don't have the money
at the moment.)

I'm pretty surprised you got Arkham City to run at all, it's
crushing a lot of people's high end systems. I'm running
both games in 1690x1050, AC with 2x anti aliasing and Skyrim
with 4x (on a 3 year old machine)-- Skyrim gives me 60+
frames per sec as opposed to the ~45 in arkham city with
occasional dropdowns where I'm getting like 5 fps. Also,
Skyrim never uses more than 2gb of RAM, whereas Arkham City
will utilize 4gb (and more once it starts to memory leak and
crash). AC is a pretty shitty port. (but still a fun game)

If you can hold out on Skyrim till you can afford a new
machine ($600-$700 in new parts would easily run both
games like a champ), I would just wait to play it. If that's
not doable and you want to play it right now, a few tips:

The obvious:
1. update graphics card drivers
2. lower resolution, textures, and anti aliasing

Less obvious:
1. disable vysnc: "Access the SkyrimPrefs.ini and add
iPresentInterval=0 to the bottom of the [Display] section.
This can improve a sluggish framerate and eliminate
instances of mouse lag." Mine is off and working fine.
source

2. Set your TESV.exe for windows 98 compatibility. Open the
game, open task manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL), right click on
TESV.exe, and set affinity for dual cores (core 0 and 1).
I had an occasional hitch that had something to do with
windows XP, and this solved it for me. The win 98
compatibility will stay, but every time you open the game
you'll need to set both cores to active, because it resets
to single core every time you close the application (so long
as you keep win 98 compat).

AC uses 4Gb of RAM? I have 2! I have everything turned low
low low, mind you, and although it looks like crap when
compared to recent systems, I'm still impressed how good it
looks. Strangely, the only real problem I'm having are the
cutscenes, they turn all choppy. I've been wondering if that
might be a codec problem, I'm not sure if the cutscenes are
in-engine or not.

Yeah, I'm not playing Skyrim til I get a new PC, I've tried
with a.. uh.. borrowed copy, and it's unplayable, there's
just no point. It's okay, it's something to look forward
to.. *sigh* ;)

And I know, it's not really that expensive to get a playable
setup, but I really do not have any money to spare at the
moment. It'll just have to wait. Or I'll have to rob a very
small bank.

I did try a lot of tinkering in the SkyrimPrefs.ini, it
really turned out to be impossible. Although I didn't know
about that compatibility trick. Not that it would help much,
I'm afraid.

Well AC will use 4gb+ ram if you have it, if not it'll make
do with 2. Skyrim, on the other hand, will only use 2 even
if you have 16gb of ram (that's actually kind of a flaw, and
modders have already released work arounds that enable more
ram usage).

I definitely don't have $700 laying around for parts either,
so I'm with ya there-- but you really should make a $20
investment in a 2gb stick of ram to go up to 4 total ;p

I'd think that it's the ancient graphics card that's the
real chokepoint in my case - it's a 7 series GeForce, it was
already shit when I bought my PC, about a hundred years ago.

Deus Ex- Human Revolution, Dark Souls and The Witcher 2

Might have been Super Mario 3D Land but there`s something
wrong with my eyes, I see 3D as two wildly separated images
and it scares me

I bought Deus Ex thanks to this thread but I'm scared to
start playing it because it will consume me.

Glad someone else mentioned Terraria. That game is such a
brilliant lifesink. And an amazing bargain at $10.

Skyrim Portal2 and Deus Ex were all very good as well.
