could have been a good genre but got spoiled early on for
the most part. surprised still nobody uses the mix/effects
aesthetic of dub, tends to leave me a bit cold instead of
warm. cold is good if it's hard, but dubstep aint is it.
come on someone, tick these boxes and post a link please

Sadly, a very accurate portrayal of a lot of contemporary
dubstep.

dubstep evolved pretty much like prog rock did, into a sad
wankfest

Geoffrey Mills, I ask this in all sincerity, please point me
to some dubstep tracks which you consider to be
groundbreaking or even just fun to listen to.

I'd given up on post 2008 dubstep...

...until tonight I stumbled across both
Kryptic Minds - Myth
(completely new group to me)
and
Pinch & Shackleton - Levitation
(two of my favourite artists from the heyday of proper
dubstep)

Better yet, the albums both the above tracks come off are
also packed full of great material too. So rare, most
dubstep albums (as opposed to compilations) are weak.

My faith in 'proper dubstep' is returned. Praise be to
Jah!

aha!

I have heard loads of dubstep but I don't really know
artists etc. Are there any dubstep artists that verge on IDM
/ niche electronica / more complex electronica? I think Reso
might come close. I don't know much, though.

Haywyre is one of my favorites currently. Obviously Tipper
is excellent, but I'm sure you've already heard him.

Also, Killowatts and Bluetech are pretty IDM dub-esque
artists. Great stuff, I suggest you check it out. :)

bluetech and tipper are awesome, but i wouldn't really call
them dubstep.

I agree, guess I'm a just old-school, but def. prefer the
drum&bass from the 90's...

Yeahhh, none of the artists I listed are really straight
dubstep, but they definitely have dubstep elements to them.
I don't really like plain dubstep, it generally has very
little musicality and very high repetition.

i.e. skrillex, bassnectar, mimosa, etc.

Not saying these producers are bad, they definitely know
what they're doing in the style they're going for. That
style just gets boring quickly to me.

must.... suppress.... nerdrage...... and i thot people
assuming the filthy retardstep was all that's there was so
2011 :P

proper dubstep is stuff like skream, mala, minnesota (one of
the few newcomers to the scene who is doing some great
stuff), rob sparx, kode9, what ceri jc posted to above....
sparse and bassweight, not hard and midrangey. music for
spliffs and subwoofers.

bluetech and tipper and the likes are more strictly
glitch-hop and mid-tempo, since most of their stuff is 100
bpm, altho of course a very similar vibe.

for more idm-ish 'steppin i recommend nastynasty, eskmo,
ital tek, eprom, loops haunt, akira kiteshi, rudi zygadlo...
altho pretty much every one of those guys has moved away
from producing straight 140 issh at point (which is to be
expected, a true artist isn't gonna be able to stay within
one bpm and not get stagnated). but man, in the heyday there
was some utterly amazing music coming out of the dubstep
scene.
