If you had some really cool original music you'd make enough
money to live on , but since the late 90s that has become
rare and so you need to either make generic dubstep or wank
and cry yourself to sleep

This is correct. Most D-list "IDM" artists such as Ceephax
make music that has limited appeal outside of a small
sausage-fest of bespectacled weedy urban mummy's boys who
have limited musical experience beyond kneeling at the altar
of Aphex Twin and anything that has the words "Rephlex"
printed on the sleeve.

In other words, bedroom electronic music producer minus
talent equals weekend hobby.

fastest way? make a track that crosses over and is played by
everyone and everything. use this to get gigs the world over
every week. even when people stop caring about the track in
question, your name is known and you'll continue to get gigs
perpetually. sorted.

eventually it'll all fade away though. better to get a skill
outside of music imo, if only to fall back on when it all
goes tits up.

oh and don't think for one second you can make a full-time
living just releasing music.

only cost you money?

Hello, there's no such thing as IDM. It is a fake genre.
What a thicko you are Bill Burroughs!!!

yeah, luckily i make money on every release! it's only
because i sell direct though and manage to sell all my
units. still nowhere near enough to make a comfortable
living on, though that's how it is for everyone, even the
really big artists. performing live is the only way you'll
ever make a living through music alone, at least for 99% of
people.

vibert said in a interview. That he got 10,000gbp for the
nine inch nails remix he did. That those days are gone and
he was lucky to make that much money per year, gigging.

best thing is not to care and do what you gotta do
regardless... in 10 years or so they will have stitched
everything up, either that or there will be no electricity
anyway

to reach anyway.

dreams..but in reality everybody knows that's just for the
few amongst us.

create a new genre of trendy music. get signed to warp,
release one dodgy record. never be heard of again. Basically
at the moment nobody is making any money apart from the big
boys. It is about holding on to what you have.

do to make a living out of doing it anyway (minus the tape
machine , depending )

There are plenty of ways to make money from your music, if
you've spent long enough refining your skills, and you have
enough confidence to sell yourself.

What he said. There was a time when I was about 20 where I
considered doing music full time and would have been able to
have at least made a living from the DJing side of it alone.
I DJed at a wedding once and it paid well compared to little
indie clubs I used to play IDM and DnB in at in Bristol, but
I realised I wasn't enjoying it and it was becoming "work".
I thought I could either make it a hobby and just do what I
liked, or forget enjoying it and try and make a living at
it. I'm so glad I didn't; I anticipated the industry going
the way it has, but I had no idea it would go so far, so
soon.

Music making is just a hobby for me these days. I don't even
bother ULing tracks any more or sharing them with people
other than my close friends, that part of "releasing" them
always seemed a chore to me. Now I have no aspirations to
make even a penny from it means that I don't feel the need
to even do that.

Be an attractive female, make videos for all your tracks in
which you expose large amounts of clevage. Quality of music
doesn't matter

Or: snap up cheap rare LPs/CDs/etc in 2nd hand stores or
ebay, tidy them up, sell them on to niche buyers for profit.
I made enough that way in the early 2000s to pay for a few
nights in the pub anyway

you didn't say making money out of writing music!

Completely embarrass yourself in some way on youtube in a
really popular way. Make the next chocolate rain or friday,
etc, then just ride the coattails of the fame.
