"Aphex Twin will perform his reworkings of Penderecki's
“Polymorphia” and "Threnody for the Victims of
Hiroshima” , this will be the world premiere of both
compositions"...does this mean it'll get released? have been
checking it out on youtube - fucking scary sounding
classical music in the same vein as robert normandeau

Am excited. no doubt this will soon turn into bitter
disappointment when it doesnt see the light of day.

my favorite actors are Patrick Schwazie and Pamela Anderson,
I would pay moneeey to touch Patrick Schwazie.

but instead of Patrick, put RDJ.

For me it was somewhat underwhelming. RDJ's first
reinterpretation was done just by noiseing the recorded
piece up and cutting it up a little bit. Maybe I didn't
notice some other obvious maniputation, but I doubt that. It
was properly intense though and definately wasn't just pure
chaos.
Then, after Penderecki finished conducting his second piece,
Richard played two tracks from Drukqs (I think Kladfvgbung
Micshk or Prep gwarlek 3b and another one, but I can't
recall which). They were much longer than the album versions
and sounded much dirtier, as if the remix was done using
samples that were rerecorded from speakers multiple times.
These two tracks were supposed to serve as a buildup to the
Penderecki reinterpretation proper, probably allowing RDJ to
prepare or plan instructions for the musicians (some of
which left their instruments to serve as a 10-men choir). In
this last piece Aphex directed this orchestra using several
LCD screens showing 7 coloured dials and symbols. This was
quite inventive and worked great (much better than
Greenwood's overenthusiastic conducting, I think), but it
seemed that Richard didn't know what to do with all this
power and the last 4 or 5 minutes of this piece sounded as
if he just felt like putting all the volume dials up and
down again. I might be wrong though, it might have been
exactly what he wanted, I rarely know with this kind of
music.
The day before I saw Tim Exile with no more than 200 people
and that was proper fun.

Could be, could be. My everyday approach to contemporary
music is purely emotional. I never attempted to analyse it
on any intellectual level, mostly because I lack any
concrete musicological skills and partly because of my
definitely shortened attention span. I love to be woken up
by it on Polish Radio 2, because it gives me fascinating
dreams during the last half hour of sleep before I drag my
ass off the bed. I also love to fall asleep to Rehberg or
Angel, but I never tried to decipher their ideas. I put up
with the fact that I miss most of the fun.
Now, you might wonder why I went to see a collaboration
between Penderecki and anybody then. Well, I went to see
Exile and it required no additional effort from me to get
invitations to the main events, which cost literally
nothing. Also, the actual emotional content of those pieces
in original is just huge, which I didn't expect. Also, to my
defense, about 25% of the audience really expected mad beatz
mixed with cellos.
That said, I'd really love to hear your thoughts on Aphex's
reinterpretations, because I'll gladly back out of
everything. Well, maybe except a couple of things. For
example: just to explain my approach to the ending of
Polymorphia Reloaded: when you hear a piece of music that
slowly builds up it's emotional content to soaring heights ,
then carefully backs up almost to the baseline from which it
started and suddenly explodes with all the voices and
instruments cranked up to the maximum, does it sound
powerful to you or cheap? I guarantee you that when you see
all the sliders being pushed to the top hastily in a very
human imperfect manner (on a huge screen above the scene) it
breaks the spell and you suddenly see that it doesn't only
seem to sound crude, but actually is quite crude.
Especially, when soon after the slider goes to zero and back
up again (twice I think). It actually is worse if the thing
is performed as written (to think that it was partly
improvised was rather silly of me...or maybe not). I really
liked the rest of that piec

Oh sorry, that wasn't Polymorphia Reloaded. I mean the piece
in the middle part of the concert after the modified Drukqs
tracks.
