my vote goes to coltrane.

even though i sometimes feel that kind of blue is slightly
better than a love supreme. but then again it's coltrane who
plays on both ALS and KOB.

what about liking, appreciating and respecting both???
i guess it's impossible.

well, you can like, appreciate and respect both. but you can
still make an attempt to figure out who you like a tiny bit
more. it's not like one of them gets executed if they get
fewer votes on an causual internet survey.

what difference does it make if i or someone else chooses
one or another, there is no point to it.

the point is gathering information. information about the
minds of people. that's a good enough point for me.

so, please, go ahead, if you don't mind.

the only miles albums i *love* are the one with coltrane,
especially "milestones" and "'round about midnight" my vote
definitely goes to coltrane, much more intense imo.

Miles really took off after Coltrane died, he had a much
bigger career. Coltrane was a great player, but Miles was a
great composer, player and bandleader, he did everything.
More than half the people Miles took under his wing went on
to be great performers too, Coltrane was just one of these
performers. Basically, the guy couldn't trip over if he
wanted to, his whole life was straight ballin'.

"coltrane was just one of these performers" not all of them
composed songs that would change the history of music
though. like giant steps for instance, which flanagan
struggles to improvise on on the record because it's just
too new for him (or anybody else in 1960). not to mention
his records on impulse which have been among the most
influential of the sixties.
and all jazzmen start their carreers as sidemen for someone
more famous, be it miles or dizzy or whoever else. miles
knew how to choose his sidemen, but he was not responsible
for trane beeing a genius.

There's no stalking involved, all your stupidity is in this

I mostly agree but Giant Steps was just difficult, I don't
buy the idea that it was revolutionary. Coltrane was fit for
the challenge he set for himself on Giant Steps, if you
really get off on technical expertise then I guess early-mid
era Coltrane might be your thing.

We're talking about a guy who died in 1967, James Brown
hadn't even gotten up like a sex machine yet. Miles lived
another 25 years or whatever. This debate seems stupid in
this light.

both brilliant but somehow mostly unlistenable because of
the breath/brass thing... coltrane gets my vote but they
were both smacked up with lush biotches etc who cares
respect is due... what is that album by miles... got 'X' in
the title, i remember squarepusher dj'ing a track off
that... and there's that tune with hancock and corea on
water babies dedicated to tony williams man that is
SERIOUSLY CLASSIC
