hello

i was asked to perform music for a reading event about the
war in the balkans, i still have to read this document, also
it'd be cool to read some experiences in this kind of stuff.
im not sure if i want to perfom or mix someone else's music,
since the person who asked me wasn't clear about the matter.
actually she did asked if i compose, and i said yes but i
improvise, then she asked me that, so maybe that's what she
was after. i thought about pushing some chords very very
slowly in order to have time to turn a reverb knob very very
slowly and go from there, trying to avoid the typical
exaggerations one is allowed to try at home. regarding which
keys to press i thought about cheating, keeping the circle
of fifths close at hand.

advices?

if you have time - take your time to prepare it well. maybe
have a sheet with a rough plan of what's coming after what,
in case you panic and forget things during the performance.
and get a mini-torch in case lighting in the room/hall is
low.

thanks

im reading it right now, there are parts in which the music
needs to go along and parts in which there must be none.

it's 23 pages, tells the story of the confict from the
beginning like in a school book but less boring. and the
text is big

just loosely compose it, write down the structure for
yourself and the settings for the gear you're using for each
section (what gear are you using anyway? more info needed)

always the same

i just put something down for the first page, the music goes
for a just half of it, when it explains about the croatian
soldier trying to put the flag of croatia instead of
jugoslavia in a town with serbian majority, and they where
killed and mutilated, that's where the conflict starts.

too much? also thanks Stein, i see you in the first rows.
lol

hope its just me and her *ghhhh*

it sounds ok. she's talking about this flag story over the
top of this? I think it works but (imo) maybe it's a little
too emotive? the sound here will be acting quite
influentially / strongly over the top of her words I think
and maybe that isn't necessary because the story is already
quite powerful in itself. anyway, just my opinion.

record/have someone film the whole performance so you can
self-evaluate/check for any mistakes later - and have a few
laughs at yourself after the whole tension is gone.
priceless

yes, sounds all another story just thinking about it, pre
recording and mimic the gestures later sounds dumb as fuck.
and a bit loser. but, let me try doing the whole thing
before.

@ Torture Garden: the piece its tad long, i tried reading
the piece while the music was playing. the long 'intro' its
perfect cos it ends at the end of the first paragraph, and
the chords that start near 30'' begins the next paragraph. i
say its a tad long cos the piece finishes before the track
but i've had the feeling of the music too emo too, and the
cut of the epic final around 1:30'' comes in handy. i
thought about fading out before at that point. it does not
seem to cover the text at reasonable level, but it's my
voice.

all the sync without measuring lenghs before :)

so trying to develop a mothod for the next pieces or for the
live itself, reading in mind along while pushing keys =
works

this kind of modulation i've got there is good to gain
tension every time it ends a phrase. kind of fucking or
what?

still, one has to choose to watch keys and study the text
before or read and study the movements before. i write down
3-4 basic movements to do for each section on a piece of
paper and go from there, or stay there while reading :)
