It had it, then lost it, then found it again. Then I dunno cuz I haven't seen the last 10 episodes or so.

it seems to me... as for American Dad gags, most are not as funny as Family Guy's but just a few are the best of the 2 programs. Stewie and Brian and Peter are 3 such good characters, plus the old paedo and the camp chap always saying 'oh no y'all' etc. whereas American Dad himself carries most of the weight on his own. Gotta take my hat of to the team behind that, Seth McF was apparently booked on one of the 911 planes but missed it coz of a hangover...

yes i thought this. i do like american dad but can feel a strange kind of fatigue after watching 2 episodes. family guy makes me feel fucking rubbish. i dont like the the visual style at all. most of the jokes are sort of like the kind of stuff you could put on a tshirt and sell on the internet, and that shits just not funny

the visual style is rubbish yeah, but it doesn't matter in this context, it's quick and fun and insightful, peter and brian couldn't be drawn better in any other style. inspired by simpsons maybe?
I must diagree tho, a lot of the gags are classic, funny, typically childish+offensive but plenty of dry wit and tangents for good measure.
quite european or british in many ways which is a weird thing to say i know but first thing that comes to mind

I think you gotta give it more of a chance. Sounds like you are judging it too quickly. Sit back and enjoy, without thinking about it too much (not to say the jokes aren't clever, cos they are).

When the outlines became thin, the writing was also kind of shit, like in a transition stage, where they were moving more away from Peter's side-jokes and more into storyline. But still- if it can even make sense- the thicker lines were more funny. The older episodes are also more fluid in character movement, which felt like pencil drawn on paper, which also helped with the original Family Guy charm. It became cold with the thin lines and subsequent wide format, but luckily the writing in the new style improved.

no that's definitely harsh... it can fail to raise a laugh sometimes, but at least a smile. only negativity sucks. and sometimes it is really super funny. i guess you won't like Crank 2 or Tenacious D & The P.O.D. = 2 other examples of superb modern TV/Film. No accounting for taste sure, but you should strive for positivity and try your best not too miss out, as that is challenge enough in life.

i watched it this christmas, and it was okay for a laugh, actually. i was a fan when it first started, cause simpsons had gone to the shitter by then, but it turned stale after a few seasons. maybe it's better now.
talking about animated series, you should much much rather watch 'Home Movies'. it stands along the earlier, top rate simpsons seasons as the very best in that area. 4 seasons, all fucking brilliant, and with about 300% more charm than anything else out there.

Yah, Home Movies is one of my favorite cartoons! +brownie_points for Home Movies.
The thing about Family Guy, is that it's also very culturally specific. If one didn't grow up in 80's USA or remember it well, a lot of references won't make sense.

just slightly, i probably need to watch more of it.
on this topic, Mission Hill was an awesome, short-lived animated series... it lasted for a season, but was quite nice to chill out to. i think some of the old simpsons people were involved in it. check it!
dtron: 've never even heard of Archer, but looking it up, it has H. Jon Benjamin in it... can't be all bad, then.

it did. i actually didn't want to watch it at first because i was so sad it ended, a truly unique series. it felt like they put a lot of heart and personality into it, i think they really nailed the feeling of being a really imaginative, daydreaming kid.
dr. katz was a fun show as well, especially when it featured good comedians. great cast.
