Do we need to be "in control"?

Mr. Quoth simply quoth.
Mr. WooferAttack simply attacks with the woofer
Mr. Wizards Teeth simply has wizards teeth.

Isn't everything that simple? Why make our world more
complex? I'm sick of discussing this bullshit concept to
people in my classroom who try and prove to me that there
"might be a god, just as long as you have faith". What the
fuck is that supposed to mean? People have no control over
anything anymore.

People can make decisions though that have an affect on
their own destinties though.

For example if I don't cross the road - I'm not going to get
run down. So from a certain point of view we do have a
degree of control....

No, Let them kill themselves with their own stupidity. It'll
eventually drag the fuckers down.

yes, but if you would have had control over whether or not
you have the choice to let the street exist is why people
have no control. People have no control over a car hitting
them or not. They are either the driver behind the steering
wheel or the person in front of the hood.
Get my point? Quite dumb, but you must understand I have no
control over what I think vs what I say vs the whole
"system" and how everyone tries to control eachother so they
can get their jollies up.

Hmmmmm....I think I get what your saying - but its a bit
heavy for me tonight (its 11.00pm here in the UK)

I think I'll bow out of this topic, and allow you to discuss
the matter with others...

you belong to the earth. the earth controls you.

right?

yes quoth you're right by saying we can't control our own
lives, and i hate people that are controlling in that
effect. But do you not believe that our choices have some
effect on what happens in our lives? Like the world makes
it's choices by the choices we make, or something to that
effect.

some, if not very very minimal effects that our own personal
choices effect us.

when have you made a choice that is PURELY 100% no
bull-shit, PURE INSTINCT? I know I haven't.

I'm continuing to let fuckers run my life for me b/c I don't
have control over it. Why should I even try?

Jedi Chris:

yes... exactly. Illusion is a wonderful thing. Only if we
experience the hurt that illusion can cause others.

Do you not think 'chance' and 'probability' play a factor in
this?

if a huge siberian tiger were to pounce upon me I would
INSTICTively make a choice to fight and to run if i got
away.

there you go... " IF "

chance & probability is either to make us feel really good,
or really fucking lame. All factors of control that some
sort of system put on our shoulders.

I CAN NOT WAIT TO DIE :)

Well, yes you wouldn't just lay there and take it - would
you? Thats a natural reaction to survive. But if you hadn't
of put yourself in the 'siberian tigers environment' you may
not of been attacked...

If I cross a road that has no cars driving along it - I
'will' get to the other side alive. However, if there is
traffic on the road I can cross the road safely when I see
'an open' window in the traffic flow. However if I just step
out into the flowing traffic there is a certain degree of
probability that says I'm gonna get splatted!

offline Quoth from Sweden on 2002-04-10 23:37 [#00166571]

Doesn't it get you thinking though? About how LITTLE of
control you actually have? This and this whole "life after
death" thing. Hah, to think that someone on earth can say is
beyond me. Why even try to believe? Why can't we just sit
and wait for someone/something other than ourselves to
decide when we're going to die. This really gets me
thinking. Not that it matters to all of you. Just want to
get the whole world thinking, because I am looking at the
world like, I, myself am wasting a lot of time.

We may not have ultimate control, but we do have much more
than you think. There have been numerous studies on how
conscious intent and will affect reality. Random number
generators producing ones and zeros, damn near fifty fifty
were altered immensly in a study by twenty or so
individuals. Shamanic culture where the healing is done
entirely nonphysically--through trance mind state
healing--heal the same diseases as western medicine with the
same success. Our view on life alters the world around us
drastically. We don't generally see the world as being
affected by us and so there are all sorts of consequences
from us not being conscious of our intervention with the
world around us. When I consider all the people I know
their lives reflect their outlookl on life perfectly. When
shit goes down in my life that is seen traditionally as out
of control I just go inside myself and find the source and
fix it. Fuck the powerless hide from the world coward shit.
Stop eating up your eigth grade science class and teach
yourself.

Calm down, I was not insulting you. I guess I deserved that
if I sounded insulting, but it was a general call to
everyone. I don't think your dumb, that is something I
would say to my own father if it was relevant to the
conversation. No offense at all, it's just that people see
the world as it is presented to them by others, not by their
own experience, and that bothers me.

i was talking about something like this with my friend
recently....and he brought up an interesting idea...
one of the reasons we have such little control in our lives
is that everything in the world we live in was created by
someone/thing else...
so we can really only have complete control over our
thoughts and the things we create

control or no control, surely at the end of the day, its
much easier to think that you do have control (ie. more with
reference to free will ie crossing the road and such) - than
thinking you don't, coz that seems to undermine eXistenZ :)
?!

I don't think I believe in initial creation. We are
eternally creating the world we live in. I see the world as
a reflection of what's inside us, includung all the shit in
our subconsious. That's why I don't buy the whole war on
terrorism bit. We (U.S.A.) brought it on ourselves in
coopereration with the terrorists by ignoring some
incredibly huge imbalances deep within, and we aren't going
to stop terrorist attacks until we face the things that seem
so obvious to other parts of the world. It's all very
clear, you reap what you sew.

In the same way if you take responsibility for everything,
not just what's in your immediate experience, life has a way
of flowing in your favor.

actually.. forget that "therefore" part...

they are all just illusions, thats all

ur not responsible for anything u do, everything is the
result of other things, which are in turn the result of
other things, and so on...

How are you not in control? I mean, you make the choice to
have your hand move in a certain way, and it does. Your
hand is not exempt from the laws of physics. Therefore you
make a conscious decision for matter to do something and it
does it.

offline jupitah from Minneapolis (United States) on 2002-04-12 07:38 [#00169387]

You just have to deny every expereince you have to believe
that you aren't actually changing the world around you with
your consciousness. It's silly. I suppose I might be naive
to believe that I am actually making these decisions, I mean
(lol) maybe my consciousness is just an illusion, eh?
