i do enjoy seeing the extreme reactions that waking life inspires in some people. also, the frequent suggestion that it is nonsense designed to make people feel smart is very funny! the ideas and dialogs may relate occasionally to the simpler ruminations of an adolescent, but to dismiss the entire film as incapable of transcending that 14 year old mindview is laughable. imho. anger is very useful, however, in that it can lead you back to what you believe.

manticore, i just looked up some info on baraka, and i will be checking it out asap! for the record, a movie that might be playing near some people now is "rivers and tides," a documentary which revolves around the the work of scottish artist andy goldsworthy. it is a must see on the big screen, look it up on rottentomatoes.com for more info.

baraka is very good, i'd recomend seeing it. unfortunately my favorite scene is the opening scene, monkey in water, but the whole thing is very excelent.
i read a review of rivers and tides, i'm going to check the listings right now!

waking life is the best combinations of all linklater's films handsdown. this movie is incredible. anyways, I did see No Such Thing and it had some interesting ideas but I couldn't take a lot of the film seriously because of the monster as well as the sometimes pathetic dialogue.

two more movie recommendations for those who have either seen BARAKA already or are intending to see it and might also want to see something in a similar vain:
this is a trilogy of films which illustrate aspects of modern life in haunting visuals set to music by PHILIP GLASS
KOYAANISQATSI: Life Out Of Balance (1983)
POWAQQATSI: Life In Transformation (1988)
NAQUOYQUATSI: Life As War (2002)
all three films are directed by Godfrey Reggio

as far as NO SUCH THING, yes, there is the ridiculously looking monster and the at times seemingly cheesy dialogue, but the way to approach it is to view it as a sort of a surrealist satire of modern life focused strictly on materialistic values and utterly devoid of spirituality. i think the movie is rather comedic and i presonally found some of the dialogue to be incredibly funny, but it is certainly not without more serious, if not all together depressing elements. a worthy viewing if seen in a proper way.

anyone seen DEAD MAN? among my favorite films. if you're into ambient music you might like this because it's sort of an ambient film... not that it should just be on in the background, but it's very minimal. yes, minimal is a much better word. i don't know what to say other than watch it.

the film "vanilla sky" adapted was called "open your eyes" (in spanish). it's about as bad as "vanilla sky," imo.
"waking life" was shot on digital video with the actors, and the animation was added digitally by different groups of animators.
i'm sure there must be a reasonably good description of "waking life" in this thread somewhere. like existence, describing it is a difficult, slippery eel.

anyhow, back to waking life. seems like people either love it or hate it. i personally liked it a lot, as it touched on a lot of interesting discussions within metaphysics, philosophy, etc. but i do admit, it is hard to follow all the conversations completely in one viewing - multiple viewings are suggested.

Unless you are willing to pay very close attention to the dialogue, you might as well turn off the volume, spark a phatty, and throw on some tunes.
