I don't know if it's a masterpiece of film making but it's definitely worth checking out. There's a lot of thought-provoking dialogue in this film. I saw Vanilla Sky yesterday for the first time, that's another one worth checking out. |

I just saw this movie for the first time last week, and ended up buying it and watching it several times... really great, especially since I've been experimenting in lucid dreaming latly. I've gotten very close, but always lose my dream state when I figure out I'm dreaming. |

last night I was just falling asleep after smoking a lot of pot, and began a dream where I was talking to some women... as the dream was fresh, I realized I was dreaming, and began to wake up. However, I woke up feeling very groggy, and could hardly move or make a sound. I lugged myself over to my door, and tried to turn on the light switch, but it didn't work, just like in the fucking movie! I collapst to the ground and started to feel panick setting in, then looked back at my bed and realized I was looking at myself sleeping. Then I woke up. It was very strange. |

what i loved about this movie was its ability to induce the feeling of a dream in me. no film has ever come as close as this one to simulating how a dream feels. |

exactly! I watched it last night right before going to bed (and smoking lots of pot while watching), and felt like I was already dreaming when it was over! Then I had that experience I described above. This has instantly become one of my all time favorite movies, I'm so glad my buddy turned me on to it! |

i also thought waking life was excellent. if you rent it, though, be sure to rent the dvd (if you have a dvd player) so you can see it as i was intended to be seen, ie not formatted for your tv. to everyone who loved waking life, and appreciated its concern with the world of the dreaming, i recommend very enthusiastically the french film "city of lost children." the only problem is the translated subtitles on the dvd are not particularly accurate, and this partly obscures the development of certain themes and events. you must, however, watch the dvd widescreen so that the frame is not cropped. |

a brief synopsis to entice you into the city of lost children: children are disappearing mysteriously from this unnamed port city. a strange religious cult which demands the renunciation of sight may be responsible. or are the crimes linked to a syndicate of pickpocket children run by evil conjoined twins? another set of clues can be found at a secret lab out in the port beyond a minefield where a madman -unable to dream himself- attempts to extract the pleasant dreams of children with an elaborate device. when a strongman with the mind of a child loses his adopted little brother to this mystery, he is joined by a little girl with the mind of an adult to try to rescue the boy. the key to everything is held by the man who created the madman and his minions, but he lives underwater and suffers from amnesia. if he can be awakened, the chain of suffering can be broken. don't blink, or you will miss it. |

waking life definitely tests some people's patience, since there is no narrative as such, the development of the main character is ambiguously related to a series of metaphysical conversations, and aside from the earnest inquiry of the participants there is no agenda or position presented. it is very heavy on the dialog. it was easier to see it in the cinema where the film totally saturates your field of vision, a more immersive experience. |

hey plaid zebra, I like you! didn't the fellow responsible for "amelie" do "city of lost children?" I have heard that they are radically different, however the fellow on the bridge with the peculiar voice and the wild curly hair is the subject of my favorite movie, which is called "the cruise" it's a documentary about timothy "speed" levitch who is a tour guide for a ny bus co.... he's one of my most favorite people ever...you just have to see it, it's incredible |

yeah, vanilla sky was a complete waste, you hit that on the nail. waking life was all right, not a classic. it looked pretty cool, and the dialogue was moderately interesting (very captivating at certain points), but not the sort of thing that really interests me. |

waking life is perhaps one of the best films in my recent memory - and one which is worth watching time and again to appreciate the various visual and thematic intricacies which it has to offer. an interesting experiment for me was watching the film in various states of consciousness - i was sober as a doornail in my initial viewing of it - and all the better for it as it allowed me to absorb the concepts persented in it more accurately. the second time around it was with the aid of (yes, typical, i know) marijuana, and the way the visuals impacted my perception of the film and the themes presented therein as a result made it an entirely different, and incredible of an experience. the third time around was during an evening involving reasonable quantities of alcohol, and this in turn sparked a long and intellectually stimulating debate on a variety of subjects - anything from the confines of logic to relationships, etc. all in all, it must be said that waking life is without a doubt one of the most intellectually engaging and stimulating movies out there. another one worthy of multiple viewings, and one which treats on many similar themes (although the approach is entirely different) is BARAKA - i'm assuming most of the people who have posted under this topic have likely seen this film as well. any thoughts? |

also, i must go against the plaidzebra grain here and say that 'Tape' was a rather interesting movie. The reason many people consider it a rather boring and dreary watch is for the fact that there is not all too much going on in as far as action is concerned, and the emphasis is placed on the subject matter which unfolds itself in the dialogues. it is based on a play, which may partially explain it's monotony, but if anyone ever wanted to witness a clever visualisation of the freudian concept of the id, ego and superego (represented here respectively by the each of the three characters), this is definitely a movie you ought to see! |

as far as vanilla sky is concerned, the original spanish film it was based on, 'open your eyes' is far more worthy of one's attention. to be perfectly honest, however, certain elements were better depicted in vanilla sky and vice versa, so if one were to merge the best aspects of the two films, you would get one incredible movie. that said, a much better movie on a similar subject as 'waking life', 'mulholland drive', 'lost highway' et al. is 'THE OTHERS', written & directed by Alejandro Amenabar (who also directed 'Open Your Eyes') which i personally thought was an absolutely impeccable film, both in terms of the visuals as well as the subject matter. also, has anyone seen Hal Hartley's 'NO SUCH THING'? another thinker, starring the ever beautiful Sarah Polley. |

the holy moment explains why the movie was animated, it was to give people the opportunity to make up a lot of the story, to fill in the gaps themselves and use their imagination, which doesnt happen in an actual film, because you are filming that "specific woman" looking a "specific way".... i enjoyed how this movie drew me in and confronted me with these usually unspoken things |

i too enjoyed this flm for its suitability to being well stoned... the wobbly toasters etc. Also, i thought its meandering narative was totally in sync with the visual style......... a great film for the cinema when stoned. it meay loose soemthing on smaller screen but ... i may just get it out tonight |

ohmy fucking god, this movie was one of the worst ive EVER EVER seen in my life, like holy shit such great fucking stupid lines as "what if were really dreaming...", isnt this shit that we all thought when we werelike 14 years old? this movie was such a dissapointment, but I laughed, cause half way through we all stopped watching, fuck that movie, lame idea, shitty art, and the concept can go to hell, its for some artsy fartsy fuck to think they are smart or something.... holy fuck this movie makes me angry, its SOOOOOOOO Bad. MTV generation eat your heart out we got in depth WAKING LIFE, the shit end of society. |

manticore- i can certainly appreciate that some people would find more to appreciate in "tape" than i did. as a matter of fact, the production was also centered around an approach that (i think is linked to a danish director) that puts certain constraints on budget, sets, etc. so there will only be one set (in this case, a hotel room) and a very limited budget. in other words, imposing restrictions as a challenge to transcend the restrictions. i always try to acknowledge, also, that viewing a videotape (as i did with "tape") is not the same as seeing a film in the cinema. |
