Dear Xlters,
I was wondering if you could supply me and help others in
need with mastering tips.

Love, Das Chode.

Mostly looking for some good compressors, but other help
would be most appreciated

get izotope ozone, read the manual and you're good to go.

The Mastering Engineer's Handbook

do not use ozone's presets out of the box! ozone is really
badly known for over compressing your music.

you can turn down the mix on the settings and it can be
useful, but be very careful. especially with that loudness
maximizer.

my advice is that with proper levels and eqing of each track
and compression while necessary, a whole lot of mastering
should not be necessary other than a light compressor. your
music should sound relatively close to how you want it as
early in the mixing process as possible.

i haven't been experimenting in this arena too much lately,
but im continuously pleased with the sound of the audio
damage family of plug-ins, and they have a free single-band compressor
which has a bigger 3-band cousin.

also learning about side-chaining compressors can do a great
deal of good in getting certain parts to stand out more,
especially drums.

i don't disagree with what you're saying.

i only recommended one of the most popular budget mastering
plug-ins, i never said i actually used it.

actually i do disagree with some of what your saying:

"... a whole lot of mastering should not be necessary other
than a light compressor."

if that's the case, why do people pay shitloads of money to
get their music mastered by a professional?

because it'll almost always sound better. that's why.

i wasn't trying to pick a fight here, just adding to what
you said.

people pay shitloads of money to get their music mastered
because there are professionals who have insanely well tuned
equipment and gobs of analog compressors to delicately mix
with, not to mention years of training.

most of us laymen on the interwebs have don't have nearly
the expertise nor the equipment to attempt such an
endeavour, in which case it's real easy to make a complete
mess of your mix. even ask any professional mastering
technician and they'll still tell you the old adage, "less
is more."

which is another thing: if you're serious about mastering,
your first purchase before anything else should be reference
monitors.

if you haven't gotten there yet, listen to your mix on as
many different systems as possible is your best bet. home
studio, car hi-fi, friend's house, anything. if you can get
your mix sounding coherent on laptop speakers and a system
with a 15" sub you've pretty much done your job.

@hedphukker I've been wondering about side chaining
compressors, don't really know how to program it :/

...The guys who are paid a shiiiiizzzah ton of money can
"hit the small spots" you can't with average equipment,
thus making it |- - - - - - -|

Urgh, if you don't know what you're doing, give it to a
proper mastering engineer.

Unless you're John Dent, you won't do a better job yourself.

yes, i dont want to discourage you to give it a try but
its not the best domain for "do it yourself"
checking eq´s and listening on more than one system
is good enough for bedroom music.
& if you want to sell it, go for pro mastering,
or just send it in how it is.
