They are fantastic synthesizers. Do yourself a favor and look at either having a midi controller with lots of knobs to map to the parameters, or use a software alternative. The interface is pants. |

Any controller with lots of knobs (or sliders). You don't need to have a computer, but it helps. Its fun either way, but the interface is less fun. Great sounding synth. |

I have one and it's love hate. Sometimes I think it's great and the sounds are totally amazing. There's a massive mod matrix. Other times the interface drives me mad and I swear you can't get a decent sound out of the thing. It's got tons of stuff in a tiny package, however programming patches is a massive pain due to the interface. Also the signal chain has a few digital nasties, such as DAC, analogue filter then ADC bit of digital stuff then DAC for output again. This allows for delays and feedback which are quite interesting but also take out some of the character you would get on an older all analogue synth. So I think it's great/annoying. There are quite a few missed opportunities, which really make me upset: There's a step sequencer but no arpeggiator, so I can't re-live the 80's :-( The DCOs can't do any "proper" vector synth stuff. LFOs don't have sinusoidal waveform and don't go slow enough for my liking! It's very good value for money and I use it quite a lot. I probably wouldn't replace it though. I end up sampling stuff from it into the Akai so I can get polyphony. I'd rather buy (or as the case is, design my own) polyphonic synth. The soundtower editor is very good and worth getting. Synth is fun to use with a couple of crib sheets to help with the interface. Also turn osc-slop and filter audio mod up to max for nice sound. There's a website somewhere with a decent tutorial and patches. I'm sure you can use a search engine. It discusses Karplus-Strong synthesis and other interesting things you can do. Although I've been a bit negative, for the money it's very good, although I wonder how it compares to things like Blofeld which have come along since. I don't think the "analogue" side of the Evolver is particularly amazing. It's main thing for making interesting sounds is the mod matrix which is mental. The main thing which usually stops good sounds is the sodding interface. Can be good fun, can be a little sod! |

Depending on how the sequencer is set up, you can use it as an arpegiator. It just means you are stuck with 3 modulation sequencers instead of 4. I used to like using one as an arpegiator, two would be sequencing waveshapes and the fourth would be controlling the filter. It would make every note sound like it was made with a different synthesizer. |

Well, I've tried that trick and it is an arp of sorts, but not really ideal. The sequencers are quite nice for turning static sounds into dynamic ones and the ability to sync things to the sequencer clock is nice. However, I still feel that the sequencer is a half fix for a number of missing features, such as proper arpeggiator and proper wave switching (like a prophet VS). I can see why the sequencer is included as it lets the thing work as a standalone self-triggering noise machine rather than being a synth module requiring MIDI in. I forgot to mention above, the Evolver's external audio processing facility is neat. I never really use it though! I think for a minimal set up the Evolver is a great thing to have. Such a shame the interface is so poor (I really struggle to visualise the patch and often turn the knob when another row is active, altering the wrong parameter and messing up my sound) |
