They bleep f**k but not shit

What's interesting about the vastly more interesting
interview with Ad Rock, rather than the puff piece about
Reason, is that he gives all this history about working with
all these different people and how they battled against the
odds doing pause tapes and drum machines and hardware
samplers, engineers getting Jimmy Page's sound, this whole
movement and then... oh now I do it all on my own on my
laptop and it practically plays itself... hmmmm. That's the
future.

hahaha,
its so funny cause its prolly true he likes a reason over
all the gear stuff :) people that didnt grow up with gear
dont know how costy and time consuming gear can be.
dont know about quality in sound though, its a bit like old
people being happy over cds or mp3s and throwing vinyl in
the bin.
i use reason too and had a fun afternoon in it.

Used to be you needed a nobleman to patronize you to secure
the resources necessary to a big production - musicians,
instruments, wine bottles, turkey legs, candelabras,
powdered wigs, bustiers. Now I just download an torrent of
Amadeus and it plays itself!

Ah come on, since forever you didn't need next to anything
to make music, whether you're a traveling minstral or doing
punk rawk like early Beastie Boys. What I mean is the rich
tapestry he wove of the past compared to the footage of him
sat there on his own at his netbook doing "a beat" and then
fiddling with the delay... I don't really look forward to
the Ad Rock solo album that eventually gets released after
being tweaked to death in a home studio with no time limit
or pressure.

A lot of my favorite music was done with a computer, usually
with sampled or recorded source material I think, and I
doubt you could do any of it as a minstrel or punk rocker.
Burial for example, or the Ghost Box stuff, or Onra.

But yes, adrock's noodling on the laptop sounds like ass and
I wouldn't listen to it unless some genius remixed it, pawel
or wisp maybe.

this is good stuff. the best thing about it is that reason
is barely mentioned. and I do like reason.

I think the "technology debate" is laughable. you use what
ever you can get your hands on and feels right at the time.

Ive been wanting to get a reel to reel machine for some
time.

Isn't that the opposite of what you started saying?

I dont think so. what I mean is that its not like what you
use will make the outcome better. reason is better at some
things (sampling ease, sequencing), tape is better at others
(timbre mostly). you can make interesting stuff with both.

I can make interesting stuff with both!? Is there anyway I
could make beats using my Oboe? it's pink but it does the
job.

I'll have to go through my back issues of Viz to find the
"Teach your wife to play the pink oboe" advert.

Really enjoyed the out takes. Enthralling and interesting
guy. I watched a documentary on BBC 4 a month or two ago
about the end of disco and the beginnings of punk and
hip-hop in New York called 'Once Upon A Time In New York'.
It's not on iplayer any more but it was pretty good. Check
it out if it's repeated.

I don't give a fuck about the "technology debate", I agree
you can make music with whatever and "computer music" is as
valid as "authentic acoustic strumming" or hitting a
computer with a hammer to make a "beat" whatever... all I
meant was that the back story about the Beastie Boys and the
hardcore scene and hip-hop and all early career that
involved a cast of thousands... it just set in stark relief
the present of someone sat on their own with a laptop.

same thing applies to any analogue process really. when i
was at uni studying design, we had huge silkscreen equipment
and presses, which i used to visit at least twice a week,
just to escape photoshop. the whole process took ages, but
the results were great and there was a sense of
accomplishment in a way that differs from doing some really
technical artwork on a computer.

it can also applies to film reel cutting, etc...

eventually, everything is streamlined and sanitised,
sometimes to the point of automation. it's not necessarily a
bad thing, as long as you either respect or explore the
avenues of past.

Yah, the outtakes were the best parts of the interview! I
could just watch that... If the interviewer were fun and
engaging, I bet there'd be hours worth of awesome shit to
talk about... listen to old tapes and shit.

reason is the perfect tool for lazy people like me. i though
that since reason 4 the high freqs sounded better.

Although I've used and enjoyed reason, this is 100000x
better due to being 80's tech:

Fairlight CMI

Also, while I'm in the mood.... have a bit of.....

Synclavier!
