So, i have a problem. I have tons of half finished on my computer. I always come to the point where i have a basic melody, drum loop etc going, and than suddenly i have no clue what to do next. If i add further elements the starts to sound like shit. Sometimes i think be able to play a real instrument would be really benefitting my music...Anyway, how can i improve my skills in this area? |

Learn to read music, it's ALWAYS a plus. I played clarinet in band (from grade school - high school), so I had a leg up when I started learning classical guitar. I would suggest taking piano lessons from a reputable teacher (see if you can't schedule lessons with a piano professor from a university near you). This will help you IMMENSELY in many things. You will be able to play melodies faster and easier when writing, and if you decide to learn some theory (which I definitely recommend), it will be much, much easier. One thing that I like to do when I'm stuck on a song is change the time signature. It's nice, because it forces you to think a little differently in order to find the right melody and rhythm. There are also several techniques you can find in some modern classical music that I find especially helpful when trying to decide what to do (listen to a bunch of Steve Reich and Philip Glass). OOPS, I forgot. When you have learned how to read & write music (should be much easier after taking piano lessons for a while), you can start taking composition lessons if you're still getting stuck (again, preferably through a reputable university). Alas, when all else fails, smoke some heat nugget. |

sometimes as they say less is more monoid. its good to understand the simple song structures like A-B-A-B-A then make the more complex 1s. take for example some of the gaysex twins songs like fartlord danglehough, dwopples theme and hola mi brola (they can be listened on ). all those 3 are just simple A-B-A-B-A songs sometimes with more drums/basslines/etc added in the 2nd A or B. dwopples theme is just very simple waltz song with only 2 parts (bass and lead) & strictly follows A-B-A-B-A it is still a good song. once u get that you can start with more complex structure with C &, D sections etc. and thinks like drum breaks/solos, instrument solos etc. example gaysex twin songs with more advance structure are the sharked man & get ur cool on (from the gaysex twin ep gaysex twin presents music from the hit video game cool spot 2: make 7 up yours) sometimes its good to decide the structure early in when your making your song. for example now im working on a song with roger dancemore called IN THE HOLO-BROTHEL for the upcoming roger dancemore album titled ROGER DANCEMORE. the song is not done yet but i already know which for it takes. intro verse 1 inst chorus verse 2 synth solo drum break inst chorus verse 1 repeated inst chorus fade out i hope this tips can make you more productive monoid. but sometimes you wanna make a different song, not with form like that but different style, growing and/or shifting. its popular with idm artists or minimal techon. i would not say constantly grow only layers, but also shift/change, drop out parts to keep on the interest. |

wavetallica phude isn't wrong about the a b a b a thing. when you make a song you shouldnt really build it by just adding layers you should move into new sections. but there a lot of songs that dont do that (like most the analords). its hard to prescribe a general rule of approach as its usually really specific to the kind of music you naturally make. youll get into a groove if its something you really like doing |

maybe this could help: if you have a nice meldoy going and dont find another one to follow, you can try to spread it out a bit, by not playing all notes immedeatly. divide the melody you have onto two or more instruments that work together, this way it wont become boring so fast. maybe splitting the whole thing up makes it easier to jam along a new melody to parts of your original aswell. its really strange. when i started making music and listening precisely how music works, i found out so many things, most of the time while walking around with headphones on. yet, when i start a new song i cant remember a lot of that and sometimes i think, if i would remember all that and transpose it, id be a good musician by now... |

when you start a new track you should remember all that by doing. the proof that you're doing something you did before is hearing something you've heard before. and build upon it. strong foundations,, that's the way it works. the rest is bullshit |

What I "put next" in my tracks, is what I hear coming next. Feel the flow, and then put down what you feel. Same for lead melodies or other melodic, harmonizing parts-- I just listen to where there is nothing, to hear what my head puts there. And then I put it. ...like listening to a looping bassline-- eventually, yo' miiind will put a melody there (or put whatever you're wanting to put over the bassline). Analogous to drawing: a circle on a page can be anything. Looking at it, you can feel a smiley face, or an earth, or an eyeball, or a skating rink from above, etc. etc. Just feel, and then put what you feel. If you can't feel your own music, that's a huge problem! Get into it and be all like, "yeeeh, aaaaw, Yyheeaahah!!" etc. |
