Actually- thanks for posting this thread. Cuz it reminded me to buy a used tape recirder in Tokyo, which I can get for prolly less than $10 US now... Well, a cheap ass one, anyway. I want to hack the speed to make it variable, for wavy ass effects and also allow for higher resolution recording (high speed).

Dude that's a wicked idea. How would you go about doing that? I have a cheap-o analog tape deck, a Technics RS TR170. I'm interested in this idear you got.

Yah, I think it's just a matter of finding the leads that go to the tape motor and adjusting current to it with potentiometer or removing resistors and replacing with other such variable resistors.
The ability to change speed on the fly is cool for effects, but the high-speed thing is also nice, cuz- tape head magnet shitz aside- the capable resolution of analog is immense. And with a cheap ass deck, there's no care if it breaks. So it's essentially modifying a crackling and shit sounding tape thing (standard), to an ultra hi-res tape recorder, PLUS with all the loveliness of tape compression by pushing input levels.
The main reason for the project is cuz I want to use it as a final master for my own music. Like record the tracks on hi-resolution analog tape, and then mix it back 50% or so with the original digital. Better signal to noise ratio from hi-speed = low noise, + lushness of analog tape. WIN.
