Recommendations for a Jedi Outcast..

offline Jedi Chris on 2002-04-08 23:23 [#00163193]
Points: 11496 Status: Lurker

Can anyone recommend any other electronic music for me to
listen to - so that I can see whether or not I like it?
(Having already posted that I'm not really into Aphex
Twin...)

.....for I fear I'll have to leave this place as a Jedi
Outcast!

:(

What sort of electronic? Like more Aphex twin style stuff or
big beats? what what what?

Yeah you kinda have to have an idea of what sound you
like...Than start from there

I was leant some Aphex Twin stuff (read the topic SOMETHING
SHOCKING)....and introduced to this messageboard at the same
time, but wasn't that impressed. I only liked a few of the
tracks on SAW1 and SAW2, and maybe one or two of the BOC
tracks - what would you suggest..?? I found that a lot of
the Aphex stuff is repetative...

I just thought it would cool to actually talk to people here
about music....but I'm afraid it something that we don't
have in common at the moment.

Uhm. have you heard all AFX? A lot of it isnt repetative. I
dunno.... check out these groups for electronix.

Nothing too extreme here..::

1. Juno Reactor
2. Uziq
3. Cylob
4. Autechre

There are so many more i could suggest but you may not like
them... if you want bigger beats

try Chemical Brothers, Dust Brothers, Juno Reactor, Junkie
XL, Anti-Loop...

I like Aphex Twin: Avril 14th, Xtal & Ptolemy......and BOC:
Roygbiv, Bocuma & Aquarius.....but that's about it!

Reflex, I have only heard of Autechre being discussed here,
but have not heard of the others...

Jedi::. the others are pretty well known too around the
world/web.... search, download a few songs, if you ask me I
can give you some good songs of theirs to download.

Music has the right to Children...is probably the one I like
most out of all the ones I have copies of..

JEdi Chris: ok what do you want? afx type or big beats? then
we go from there.

I'd hesitate recommending Autechre to someone who thinks
Aphex is repetitious!

offline Jedi Chris on 2002-04-08 23:59 [#00163272]
Points: 11496 Status: Lurker

Give me two Aphex tracks that fall under each of those
catogories....and I'll quickly play a bit...then I'll let
you know which I prefer...'cos I'm not sure what you
mean....

This is all Aphex

Someone else wanna put something forward? Man, it's like all
genres of music, you need a starting point for yourself.
Rarely does something someone recommended for you turn out
to be truly satisfiying - you need to discover it for
yourself! Just take the main electronic artists - Aphex,
BoC, Ae, Squarepusher, Plaid etc... and download some
shit... and see what you like! Aphex is good as a whole, d/l
loadsa stuff... BoC is nice mellow, vibe music... etc

offline Jedi Chris on 2002-04-09 00:02 [#00163282]

I'm sorry if you all think I'm stupid...but I got introduced
to this message board and just got hooked with the
insightfull discussions that we have here....but I am
relatively new to this kinda music and would 'like to like
some of it' - that sounds silly doesnt it? I just want to be
more of a part of this place.....

:(

Junkie XL and MKL the same?

If you like mellow stuff, try

air - moon safari
global communication - 76 14
stereolab - dots and loops (not electronic)

are amazing?

Listening to a few more...I like Heliospan too

The thing I find is that when I've sat down with of these
cds and start listening, all of a sudden you get one track
out of the blue that sounds absolutely shitty....and I think
where the hell does that fit in....

Maybe I'm better off just gathering the tracks I like and
burn them onto one cd

Get On and its remixes.
Suggestions....
CiM
Plaid-Download New Family; it's awesome. Also, there
P-Brane EP is very very good.
Plod
Arovane
FCS North-basically live drum 'n' bass
Spacetime Continuum
Two Lone Swordsmen
Sensorama-Echtzeit is a good song
fsol
amorphous androgynous
Surface 10-Concentrations<---song
Jega-His album Spectrum is a must have
Max Tundra
Photek-Modus Operandi
Tusken Raiders-(mu-ziq side project)

And if for some very odd reason you haven't gotten anything
by Orbital your very depririved. You need to get some
pronto!

Hope those suggestions help out a bit.

i notice when i first hear a track and don't like it
sometimes with repeated listenings it grows on me, becomes a
favorite, it's strange. that happened with Autechre's Cfern
off Confield but i wouldn't recommend if u like mellower
sounds, earlier Autechre is mellower.

Personally, get the new cornelius album. After that, you'll
know if you like all this electronic malarky or not.

Plus its tres good man.

Or do what i do, go into a record shop with £50 and buy an
album by the main artists talked about on this board, BoC,
aphex, squarepusher and autechre. If you hate them, hey, its
only money.

Or just download Soulseek, see where it's worth spending,
then buy some albums!

BoC MHTRTC... HMV... £5.99! Excellent!

Seriously though, I'm trying different tracks now and
putting them into a seperate folder of 'favourites'. I think
my disliking of certain tracks has given me a rather
negative attitude to not listening to them again....a sort
of 'thats crap - not gonna listen to that again' attitude,
and that's wrong....

Here's a small list of the ones I actually like:
Actium
Heliospan
Ptolemy
Delphium
Avril 14th
Kesson Daslef
Nanou 2

Say, JediChris--how about something like Depeche Mode, or
Nine Inch Nails? Maybe Tori Amos' "From the Choirgirl

GOod luck, Chris.

Can I thank you guys anyway for your help in pushing me in
the right direction....I'm gonna continue going through my
BoC and Aphex tracks and re-listen to them, sorting out the
ones I like to the ones I dislike, and I'll take it from
there....

What I think I'll do is publish a list of all the ones I
hate maybe ;) That should cause some controversy eh??

I'd miss the conversations on this messageboard if I stopped
coming here!
