say that i want to switch from my sony mdr-7506 to more
serious headphones. is there someone that happily switched
from those to another pair? im more likely to trust those
who have had the sony for a long time but since we're on the
internet, any opinion is welcome. i'd love to hear sounds
more distinct.

I'm using Roland RH-50s at the moment and finding them to be
quite good. They're not as detailed in the midrange as the
far more expensive Fostex pair I had before them but they
have much more clarity in the top and bottoms.

Well if you like a 'warm' sound Beyerdynamic is for you.I
tried some other headphones, in the same price range, but i
did not like the thin sound. These headphones i guess aren't
especially for dance music, but more for classical music.
Hmm thats all i can say, that and the artists for haiti are
wearing them in the artists for haiti video...capitalism

big second that. audio technica are really good, very nicely
balanced and mixes do transfer better than any headphones
i've ever used. proper robust design too.

i'm tempted

yo, the Sennheiser 650 are too expensive

given a look to the other prices and descriptions, the
Audio Techinca seems to satisfy my needs the most

reading the Sennheiser 650 reviews on amazon

more than one seem to put on evidence the fact that you have
to be patient, that they do their job gradually.. that is
not a Sennheiser 650 feature, it's them ears

I have a pair of Sennheiser HD590, and they did actually
take awhile to "break in" or whatever... but maybe the
headphones were actually reprogramming my brain, etc.

But anyway... Super open and solid sound. I love them.
...except my cable is fucked, so I gotta get a new one.

i swear it was the same with the sony, it took a lot. my
cable is fucked ad well, sometimes when i take strange
positions i get sound only on the right channel. it might be
the jack, but then i adjust myself and everythings back to
normal. the material is consumed as it would be after 4
years, but apart from that and occasional electostatic
shocks they still work fine.

offline mohamed from the turtle business on 2010-07-25 02:46 [#02387854]

Here's my quick rundown of various headphone manufacturers'
house sounds:

AKG - Natural, tame, balanced, nice for engineering
purposes
Sennheiser - Excellent, comfortable headphones that do great
with classical music
Beyer - Lots of highs + lows, good for electronic music, but
not very strong midrange until you start talking about their
upper models
Sony - Don't bother
Grado - Kind of silly sounding to me, but quite good with
rock music. Not comfortable at all, not good for mixing.
Audio Technica - Never heard them myself, but their
reputation is strong among those who are looking for a
quality, balanced closed headphone. Kinda expensive compared
to other headphones of a similar quality.

Have had a pair of mdr-v600's for five years or so. They've
taken all the abuse I've handed them & still sound clear.
Wouldn't go as far as to call them clinical but they don't
lie much. Isn't a whole lot of bass response but that can be
a good thing as my sub woofer can make things to muddy. All
in all i'd buy them again. My friend has a pair of grado's
which he swears by. I gather their more "audiophile"
oriented. I've had sennheiser's before but i ended up
blowing one pair & the other set fell apart on me. I dont
think the sennheiser's or the audio technica's are meant to
be thrown around or left in a backpack. I've heard good
things about the more expensive akg's from engineers so they
might be a good route.

yes i think i'll treat this new ones with more care and use
the sonys as spare car. i've always been satisfied with them
except for the bass, but i think i never really trained the
ear for a proper bass frequency cos of a sum of
circustances, speakers sucking a bit, no possibility to play
stuff loud ect. it is a shame

thanks for the response TroutMask, i've been waiting for
your post

i haven't checked yet, but i learnt to match the
equalization of the speakers with the one of the 7506s just
by turning the sub down and boosting teh highs. sounds like
heaphones in a living room.

'learnt to match' sounds a bit pretentious

the only sure thing is that's impossible to make something
by ear without both the listenings

-real monitors
-modal ringing tamed via velocity or pressure based traps
-reflection free zone (20ms ISD, all reflections above -20dB
destroyed)
-late arriving diffused soundfield (exponentially decaying)
