i talked to him today and told him Outkast and Moby were inspired by Aphex, and he says 'you say that for everyone' but c'mon..it's true! He doesnt believe other artists could be inspired by him..then he started to list every possible artist in his mind inspired by aphex..so i went off icq..first time ive ever got mad at him

My roomate and i can kind of guess how people made hip hop/ drum&bass etc. My friend who is a good MC tried to argue that DJ Premier is better than Aphex Twin, more skilled at writing music. He thought DJ Premier wrote all of it like played the piano and some of the other instruments etc. We had to explain to him that he is a producer that only samples records and doesnt play any real instruments(if you just sample things your not really a musician), Premiers hip hop is some of the best. Richard is a classical composer, writes all of his music himself samples it and then pushes the capabilities of a sampler to the limit, does some super technical complicated editing and effects. Cant really compare the two one is a sampler and the other is a composer. Skill wise Aphex wins everyone who makes music using samplers, drummachines, syth's or computers in my opinion.

i wasn't sure about that anyways ;) t'was a while back when i was new to that board (compared to some people here i still am) when nacmat introduced me to confield, now i have all their releases and the rest as mp3'sbut i understand people not liking them for their lack of melody. imo their melodies aren't obvious, one has to listen for a while, they use a very strange langague that gets more and more complicated with every release. but then i never get tired of them, it just never gets boring, there's always something new to discover
if he'd raise his hands up and down, like a butterfly, that'd be funny, no?

Response to: marlowe. I make sample based music and i definitely dont consider myself a musician, im a producer. The bomb squad / Public Enemy if they only sample records there producers, if they actually play instruments: piano, bass guitar whatever and then sample what they wrote there musicians. Aphex Twin is a musician, a composer he writes his own original piano works etc. Aphex twin does use a sampler but i doubt he samples other musicians riffs like in most hip hop. Producer is not a put down, but if your just a button pusher and use sampler you cant call yourself a musician.

beethoven was a producer - composition is mainly about producing, not being able to play an instrument - you think beethoven could play every single instrument he ever wrote for?
