From an internet forum? This happned to me twice last week
and i dont know what the actual reason was, i can only
guees. It kinda angers me to know that there is a bunch of
tossers on the net, who shield themselves from the outside,
and dont allow any other opinions to be heard.

Yes from two big forums, for no good valid reason, if I knew
I was going to get perma banned for that, at least I
would've made an effort. This was a while back, when I
actually posted on the internet.

I got a temp ban for a week once for cross-linking a thread
on a motorcycle forum. I only did this once and in the
context of what I was posting (which fitted exactly 50:50
between two separate sub areas of the forum and did not
clearly fit into one) it seemed absolutely the right thing
to do and not trolling/spamming. I just laugh when I hear
people here complain about the moderation being "too
strict".

Oh yes and I belong to a couple of places where you have to
pay to get posting privileges. That really makes
people behave and you should see how bent out of shape they
get when they get banned:
"I paid my money, you can't ban me!"
"We make people pay, because it eliminates 99% of the
trolls. You're that other 1% we still need to be able to
ban, despite this."
"Well, if I'm banned, I want my money back!"
"You really don't get this, do you?"

i got banned a couple of times.

what pisses me off about the internet is that you can write
the most ridiculous stuff (and, you would think it must be
obvious to everyone that you're not fully serious, but
joking/exaggerating) and people take you 100% seriously and
then infer that you're very stupid or a morally very bad
person. it's amazing.

Some forums are affiliated with (real world) clubs and you
need to be a member of the club (which costs money) to get
posting ability and to see some areas of the messageboard.

Others are forums reserved for users who've paid for a
service (EG users of a particular piece of software).

One motorcycle club I belong to routinely bans accounts of
people who don't turn up to the real-world meet ups. This
alone tends to weed out the trolls and unpleasant behaviour.
It's easy to talk tough on the interwebs. It's another thing
entirely when you realise you'll be seeing the 18 stone
ex-convict you made those comments to in the flesh at a race
meet next weekend.

I did once see one instance of one online altercation (the
result of a PM) nearly spill over into a real world bar
fight. When things got heated, the (to my mind) innocent
party invited the other person to step outside into the car
park. He soon quietened down and was more civil online
afterwards too.
