36 - Hollow

Just to let you know that the new 36 album "Hollow" is
scheduled for release on the 14th June 2010. Initial
pre-orders for the CD can be found at www.3six.net
alongside 2 samples from the album itself. Please note that
the album will remain CD only for the time being, though
digital MP3s will be available in the near future.

As for the album itself, I feel it is the natural
progression from Hypersona and includes 13 tracks, all
produced from 2009 to 2010. Writing about music isn't my
strongest aspect, so i'll let your ears decide for you.

Oh and because i'm lazy, please join the 36 facebook group to
keep up to date with music related stuff. saves me spamming
here, even though i produce at the pace of a turtle.

More samples will come later to release.

Peace!

Yeah, more samples will come a little later and then upon
release, the whole thing can be streamed in its entirety.
Way too many artists/labels spoil the surprise of new music
by letting you literally hear it all before it's even
released... it kinda ruins the experience of hearing an
album for the first time in my opinion!

Thanks yall, can't wait for you to hear it fully :)

Loving the opening track "Hollow". As a "Hypersona" fan I
keenly anticipate the new album.

Oh my god. This is beautiful. Epic. Wondrous. Soul
touching.
All the things Hypersona did but not some duplicate of it.

I'll have to get both of these albums in the very near
future.
I want to smell your ink. I want to touch your plastic.

and how is hollow different to hypersona?
do you consider it a continuation or is there any
stylistic/creative/mood difference?

btw, i fucking love the warm mood you get in those tunes

Well, from a production standpoint, it was made in a
completely different way. I think this reflects in the sound
of the tracks, though stylistically, there it is definitely
a continuation from hypersona. I think if you like that
album, you'll probably dig this too, though obviously i'm
way too close to my own tracks to give an objective opinion.

I spent a long time since the first album trying to get a
direction for this anyway and I certainly didn't want a
carbon clone of the first. Hopefully it'll be fresh to the
ears and I don't think it sounds like anything else out
there.

following the interview:
- how was the production process, then?
+ do you think you this new tracks have a more 'song'
structure (evolution etc) than hypersona tracks, which i
felt more like concret ambients moments? (sorry for bad
expression)

offline Brisk from selling smack at the orphanage on 2010-05-29 15:56 [#02381812]
Points: 4667 Status: Lurker

Different DAW and just a completely different approach to
writing music. I don't want to bore anyone with details.

As for "song based" structures... yes and no. They're still
loops at heart, as I like to work a melody and let it evolve
naturally over the duration of the track, but tracks like
"Geiga" definitely have a beginning/middle/end... i've also
used a lot more guitar in this, though not in a very
pop-like way. I dunno, it's hard to describe the method
behind my own music and there wasn't any set way of doing
things... some tracks are very, very different to others.

"Last year 36 impressed TSB's Erich Meister with his debut
album, Hypersona; this year he may achieve a full sweep with
his sophomore effort, Hollow. While the UK artist may have
loaded many critics with an opportune pun involving the
title of his album and the content therein, no such cheap
shots will be featured here. It's clear that Hollow features
a more mature artist dealing with darker themes than on
Hypersona. While we still are treated to a wide sampling of
synths, found sound, and scare electronics, the new album
has a larger focus on processed guitars and adds some deeply
buried string passages as well. The resulting effect is a
dark, turbulent album, one where drones and white noise do
their best to erode the more delicate electronic and
classical instrumentation caught in the ambient snowstorm.
In the end, 36 has created a highly rewarding album that one
can pour countless hours into trying to discover its every
last secret."

Yesterday I was pooing, and I recalled the main theme of
Hollow. And this is true, and I mean this sincerely: but
good job. I hope to buy the physical release when I have
not negative million dollars.

One of the biggest turn offs with ambient music is that,
most people seem to be making it to give some idea that
they've got artsy fartsiness or shit like that, and the
product of such efforts is usually so lacking in thematic or
narrative quality, that they're essentially "just" early
experiments with harmony and reverb. Most efforts are not
pleasingly hummable or memorable.

But Hollow is really saying a lot in an intentional manner,
and that's great, mang.

I honestly can't remember the last time I heard ambient of
such quality.

So what? Brisk is 36? Or what's going on here?

After a full listen, I actually cried in some spots. That's
saying a lot.

Even beautiful songs from artists you sometimes just take a
stand back and think, that was beautiful.

The only 2 artists ever to invoke such strong emotional
responses from me would be 36 and brock van wey's 'white
clouds drift on and on'. Congratulations again.

It gets me every time at the end of 'Home' where she says "I
was thinking about home.."

Ordering both when I get paid.

PS- I love you.

Is it just the sample version/mp3 encode/my speakers, or is
there a high-frequency whine in Hollow (the track)? I really
want to like that song but that high-frequency noise kills
my ears. :( Other samples sound very nice, though.

I hear it too but I've lost quite a bit of hearing when it
comes to high frequencies so it doesn't bother me much.

I remember this being an issue with a certain audio
interface. Can't remember which one off the top of my head,
maybe a unit by edirol or m-audio.

offline Brisk from selling smack at the orphanage on 2010-06-19 12:01 [#02384799]
Points: 4667 Status: Lurker

Nah, not a technical issue and just an aesthetic choice. I
just like the juxtaposition of white noise and high freq
sines in the tracks, so I added them on certain tunes. Maybe
my tolerence of 12-14khz has built up after years of audio
abuse, hah.

Sorry to hear you don't like it!
