In some tracks the bass seems almost inaudible, but it is there...what does this mean psychologiclly?

By lowering volume and keeping panned center, psychologically, this might be perceived as a distant sound on the z-axis.
Mono mixing back in the day was awesome at this, as they weren't able to widen the mix by panning left and right... so they went forward and backward! Modern music has lost a lot of this subtle technique.
