Mac Snow Leopard: Worth it?

Now that 10.6 has been out for a while and received an
update, what are your thoughts on the OS? Have most of the
incompatibilities and bugs been fixed, and is it worth the
price, albeit small, to upgrade? For me, the main software
in question is the Logic studio suite and M-audio usb and
firewire drivers. Can anyone comment on whether these
programs and devices are functioning properly in Snow
Leopard? Are there any must-have features that justify
making the upgrade? Your replies are much appreciated.

yeh dunno about Logic and your M-Audio stuff but most things
should work fine… i switched very early on, before retail
in fact… only a couple minor things broke, Safari AdBlock
and some Quicksilver modules, things like that… but
nothing major. LAZY_COMPATIBILITY

feature-wise there is not much you would notice. only minor
UI improvements, like connecting to wifi is a bit more
clear… oh you can make your own services if that's your
thing, it's a nice feature.

i'd say make a backup and try before you buy. install will
take 30 minutes...

Thanks for the reply. I'm probably going to hold off for now
since it doesn't really seem like there are any major
additions or improvements, but I might upgrade at some point
in the future.

I got it just to get the latest bootcamp drivers to make
win7 go nice (finally tap to click and 2finger tap
right-click for trackpads) then ended up installing it
anyway. Things seemed to crash more often, logic included +
VLC and MS word amongst others. Only after a clean install
of Leopard and then upgrading to SL did this stop.

Btw logic 9 is the daddy!

I want to get logic 9 but I'm so pissed at Apple for making
it a fully paid upgrade. They used to allow you to upgrade
for a discount (or for free) and now I have to pay $500
again to get logic 9 after I just bought 8. Fuck that.

What does 9 do that 8 couldn't, out of curiousity?

If you work with recorded/sampled audio lots you may find
the Flex tool useful for getting notes to fit on a grid
(without timestretching or chopping). It uses a melodynish
way of analysing drum/note hits which you can slide into
position. I like it coz its a quick'n'dirty way of
timestretching without destruction to the original audio, so
you can mess with the song bpm without ur sampled
beats'n'pieces going out of time (kinda like how Acid does
it). Of course, once you finally settle on a bpm you can do
a proper high-quality stretch like usual, but this cheap way
avoids 'locking in' to a fixed bpm early on.

Also, all the trackpad gestures that i'd "hacked" to get
going in 8 are now integrated into 9 and run much smoother
than the hack (eg. pinch in/out = track zoom, rotate
left/right = track volume up/down)

That's cool about the timestretching/bpm thing. As for the
trackpad stuff, I own an imac desktop and use a mouse so it
wouldn't effect me much. Are there any new synths or effects
in 9? I'd really like to upgrade I just don't have the money
for it right now.

But if you got a magic mouse... ;) Actually i'm not sure if
that would support the same gestures, possibly not zoom. But
it's hackable (the mouse) so perhap?

Nope havent noticed anything in the way of new
synths/effects but then again, I didn't install all that
extra content just the core stuff. Seriously if you own 8
already, can't you justify saving your hard earnt money and
ripping off apple just this once? I upgraded to 9.0.1
without any hitches (cracked copy here)

I suppose I could upgrade with a cracked version, I was just
really happy to have bought 8 because I pirate so much
software already... I kind of wanted to get away from
pirating stuff. But I do think it's pretty underhanded of
Apple to deny people of upgrading for a reduced price. How
does one go about finding a stable cracked copy of 9?
torrents?

Yep, i just isohunt'd that shit up but didn't grab the
whopping 45gig version (just the main disk). My mac
partition is only 60gig big afterall. Doubt i'd use all
those extras anyway; do you find them useful at all?

I know what you mean about pirating stuff, plus it's nice
knowing you can safely upgrade online without fuss etc. This
is my way of getting back at apple for not replacing my
battery under apple care (they claimed i'd gone too far over
the number of expected battery 'runs'...which is true but
only because it was a faulty batt with short life to begin
with!!)
