'Kawloon walled city' is a district in Kaloon, Hongkong ,
people once lived there; in a densely structured urban
environment , a labyrinth of narrow corridors and dark
winding passage ways.. a poor slum city inhabiting over
50,000 people all stacked up in high-rise flat blocks living
in close proximity, it was the most densely populated city
on earth.

the government abandoned the city, so there was no services
inclueding law and order, fire rescue etc

Through government funding most people were given new homes,
but some people stayed in there in a life of anarchy until
1993 allot of the buildings were destroyed , the government
officially closed off the city and it was forbidden to live
there.

now it's a lifeless ghost city! a maze of rotting urban
decay!

I was thinking how cool it would be to explore this lost
city, do some filming and take photographs.. you would need
protective gear, there is bound to be dangerous toxic
materials. and structurally it is not safe but that's all
part of the fun...

Nice pictures larn.I got interested in kowloon a few years
ago.I had a really vivid dream about being stuck in this
place, and long story short, when I first saw your third
picture above,I was like,thats it!Thats the place I dreamed
of!
Another great, atmospheric place that would inspire me to
create something moody is Hashima(Battleship Island).

thanks for that link!! i didn't know about Hashima, very
interesting! i have been reading about abandoned cities over
the past few days and just had this idea to explore them and
document it

I thought that they just demolished these places, but there
are allot of places still standing which are just empty, so
cool!!

From what Im led to understand the negative environmental
impact from razing these places to the ground would be too
massive and far reaching.Easier on the world(and probably
cheaper)to allow nature to reclaim it.They make fascinating
subjects though,I always allow myself to fantasise about
secret communities still living amongst the ruins.
Another place is obviously Pripyat,in the Ukraine.

If i had the money I would organize an expedition to explore
these ghost cities and document our findings, with a creepy
sound track

this would be a perfect location to make a zombie film or
something scary

more info:

The City was notorious for its excess of brothels, casinos,
opium dens, cocaine parlours, food courts serving dog meat,
and secret factories

cool!!

very cool, I would like to explore this place even though
doing so would require a hazmat suit (and an ak-47 to be
safe).

This reminds me of my friend's adventure across the Hudson
river in NYC to an abandoned mental hospital/asylum. He and
his brother took a row boat across the river and described
the place much like you did this, larn. Someone must have
seen them and thought they were shipwrecked because the
coastguard and police came down on them like hawks on their
way back to the city. Apparently they were extremely
understanding about the whole situation.

Anyway, ever since I learned of this I've always wanted to
explore such a location, myself.

'Kowloon's dark other, a city within and also without a city
- a scorned, renegade parasite metropolis with its own rules
(or rather lack of them) existing as a society of its own on
the very fringes of another. Without the attentions of
architects and with utter disregard toward planning
regulations, by the time of its demolition in the early 90s
Hak Nam (its colloquial name meaning 'City of Darkness') had
become almost one gigantic building that reached up to
fifteen storeys high in places, a mass of homogenised
ramshackle structures packed together so tightly that
sunlight barely reached the lower levels and that could be
(and sometimes was) traversed almost entirely via the
rooftops.'

lovely stuff larn! i'm glad you shared this

So it's been torn down? That's too bad. I thought they were
just going to let nature reclaim it... That idea was just
too awesome, apparently.

Way too awesome, brame the Chinese govern-bent (ohlol) for
not being able to handle it! Sure, people would have
documented this place well visually before it happened but
that just doesn't seem to cut it..

I thought it had been partly demolished, but perhaps it's
all gone now :(( oh well

i don't know very much about it, my friend told me about
this place and i was just thinking about how cool it would
be to explore a whole abandoned city. there is a website
that has them listed

here

the one atwood posted looks interesting and so does the one
in taiwan
