this depends on what music you are making, if you want to
write electronic music, then you will need something a bit
more equipped than garage band. if you can't afford it, then
try it first here

while you are using it you can save up and buy the original,
that's what i did

ableton sucks? either

1. you haven't spent nearly enough time with it, or
2. you're an idiot.

DAW frustration is so 2003.

Is there inteligent synthesis software enywhere?????

it's just a matter of preference. who gives a shit. I can
only recommend Ableton tho, and I do deeply recommend it.

I find fruity just as intuitive as Ableton, but Ableton just
patched things up did them in a different way, which makes
certain things a bit easier and quicker to work with, which
i like. Basically, you can do the same with both
applications, if only you'd be smart enough to look beyond
what the GUI gives you.

Meat Synth (mac only)

there's also the softsynth version of Nord Modular G2, it
has something called Patchmutator which uses Genetic
Algorithms(basic interactive AI, if there exists something
you could call AI then this and/or neural networks),
interesting but maybe not what you're looking for.

imo all DAWs (i've tried) are severely lacking in terms of
tools to assist you structuring your composition. Best they
come up with is arpeggiators and some quantization based
wank. Dunno maybe Numerology has potential but also appears
a bit limited.

Check your sources first. I'm suggesting that if you miss
out on something in a program, make it yourself. Why blame
the intuitivity of a program that some team put a lot of
effort in. It's just a tool, like a hammer, that everyone
uses in their own ways. You can slam nails into wood with
it, but if you're clever/curious enough you find out it's
quite the back scratcher.

or rather not only "make it yourself", but also "solve it
your own". Either way, you can't blame a program's
intuitivity if you're just too lazy to do hard work for
example.

Can't you virtualize windows on MAC ? Try Virtual Box or
VMWARE. Why not have the best of both worlds ?

you have windows running in a window then, limited resources
(ram/cpu), no full directx support etc. okay for Word and
Solitaire of course

It's a matter of what you're used to. Ableton doesn't
"suck" just because you didn't spend enough time with it to
figure it out. I tried Fruity Loops one time and became
frustrated and irritable because I was used to trackers and
couldn't figure the damn thing out. Doesn't mean the
program sucks.. in fact most of my friends used it to great
results. If FL Studio works for you, then why switch?

Unless the music you have swimming around in your head
cannot be executed on the program you've got. Maybe if
you're trying to compose an Indian raga scaled polyrhythmic
concerto for the kazoo then I could see how the software
could be a limitation.

As larn said earlier.. What kind of sound are you after?
What about FL Studio is holding you back? Maybe that line
of thought could help you come to a decision. Good luck!

I still don't get it, no program has ever limited me, ever.
Not even Reason. If the program is limiting you from making
a certain something, i think you'd be simply lacking
knowledge about the software, or even the drive to be
creative and get yourself over the hump there. I think it's
a matter of how hard you want to work on your music, people
sometimes expect certain things to be thrown into their lap
from the software, but that's not how things work. A hammer
doesn't pick itself up and slams a nail into a piece of wood
does it? I wish people got more creative with the ropes they
were given, instead of waiting for something or someone to
do it for them. What's the fun in that? :P

I'm enjoying Ardour. No MIDI sequencing which is a nice
change as I have to record everything or use external
sequencers. I will probably go back to FL or Logic though
depending on how much money I want to spend on a laptop. I
just find them quicker to work with.

What was this conversation about again?

Oh yeah.

Stay away from Garage Band in my opinion when you have the
infinitely easier to use Logic available.
