Here's a really good one:

Children Underground is a 2001 documentary film
directed by Edet Belzberg.

The film follows a group of abandoned street children, aged
eight to sixteen, who live in the Romanian subway system.
The street kids are encountered daily by commuting adults,
who pass them by in the station as they starve, swindle, and
steal, all while searching desperately for a fresh can of
paint to get high with.

One of the children director Belzberg follows is Cristina
Ionescu. At first this child may seem to be a young man, but
you later find out that girls have to become hard and boyish
in order to survive. This is also very apparent with another
child named, Violeta 'Macarena' Rosu, who is also a girl.
The nickname 'Macarena' derives from the song "Macarena",
her favorite. Three other children, Mihai Tudose, and
brother and sister Ana and Marian, are also profiled.

The film explores the lives of these children, who are shown
fighting, abusing themselves, and becoming addicted to
inhaling a spray paint called Aurolac. The filmmakers follow
Mihai to his family's home in the town of Constanta. A
similar scene films Ana and Marian as they visit their home,
which is also outside Bucharest.

also the Mortenson interview on Moyers was a very unexpected
insight on how not necessarily 100% superfucked Afghanistan
is, given the right people doing the right things

i've tried for some time to find good documentaries and
information on the history of writing/symbols (sumer,
cuneiform, hieroglyphics, etc) and its implications on human
consiousness.

here's a part from a documentay called
Written Word - Birth of Writing

sadly, the effect of Zecharia Sitchin writing his book "The
12th Planet" (exciting as it may be) is that you only find
SHIT on the topic of sumer, babylonia, etc.

two other short documentaries (or part of) worth your time
(if you have the interest), are:

A Brief History of the King James Bible

Cold Mountain (Ch'an-taoist poet)
You get to see Red Pine and Burton Watson!

and we'll round it off with the first episode of a swedish
documentary with Jonas Gardell, on the origin of the God
concept. it's subbed.

Ã…h, Herregud!

Children Underground.

Yes, I remember watching that one. It fucking haunted me for
weeks. Imagine a non-fictional Lord of the Flies and add two
tons of misery on top and you're not even close to the shit
going on in that doc.

Recommended if you want a good ol' downer.

David Attenborough is my hero. Anything by/with him is tops.
I concur that King of Kong was good. The antagonist is one
of the most humongous douchebags the world has ever known
which made it simultaneously hard to watch and impossible to
look away. I like this thread and plan on checking out some
of the docus I haven't yet seen. Cheers!
