it sounds ok.

Jega is generally mediocre, but there are a couple nice
tunes on disc 1. Disc 2 did not fare well on first listen.

haha well it was a first listen but my overall reaction was
that they were a bunch of messy flavorless tunes with a lot
of beat stretching and very little of interest going on
melody/ambient wise in the background. (talkin disc 2 here).
Disc 1 was just ok.

I'm not bored of IDM per say, but the new releases have been
in a sorry state for awhile.

Looking forward to that ae/blackdog release though, that
sounds fantastic from the samples

I have not heard this album yet, but the mix that was played
on Mary Ann Hobbes a few months back was very good IMO. I
assume that those were all tracks from Disc 1 though.

i just dont understand whats wrong with it..
when i hear it all i hear are great beautiful sounds and
nice dense arrangements.. if its played loud its especially
effective

i know its not the most groundbreaking album, but wtf is
wrong with some nostalgia for the old geometry days?
the only thing i have to critique off the bat is that there
shouldnt be vocal samples on some of disc 2..

I guess in order to be nostalgic for his Geometry album, you
had to like it to begin with. I listened to it a few times
back in the day and thought it was just alright. There's a
pretty long list of "second tier" IDM artists that I'd put
well ahead of Jega.

I'm listening to Disc 1 of this right now and again, it's
not bad.

He does a good job emulating BoC with "Sakura," and some
other nice moments.

Here it comes...

When i hear it i hear one and the same slab of sound... in
terms of repetition, in terms of composition, in terms of
sample usage. It just bores me to have to listen to one CD
full of the same kinds of chord progressions, same samples,
same delay effect on every single drumhit, same track
beginnings, same track endings, etc etc. When i heard track
4, i thought "the fuck? This track is fucking long" and i
noticed i was at track 4 already. Hounestly, i completely
missed the """"Variance""""! But i have to admit, there are
indeed some lovely bits here and there, but they were just
bits, the rest is just uninteresting to me.

Then came CD 2... It started out quite alright if i have to
be hounest, but after two tracks after Tensor i already had
enough of the random sounds thrown together and 'odd chords'
just to make things sound weird or something i dunno, i've
heard too many of the reverb effects already, but i kept
listening on. Now Cascade Decoherence is nice! I like more
what happens on the background, but again it has the same
delay and reverb effects slapped all over the individual
beat hits like yoghurt thrown onto a spike mat. But i liked
this one.

Then came Aerodynamic, which again started out well... At
the 13th time i've heard both those 8 bit bleeps fade in and
fade out at the exact same spot, i kind of got annoyed. It
was around this time someone on SLSK showed me a bit on
youtube which had, i guess, the previous version of this
track, which made me outraged... The youtube sounded
fantastic! He fucked this reprise up badly imo :( That's
where i stopped and skipped through the last four tracks,
which were exactly the same fashion, only a slightly higher
BPM on every track towards the end of the album.

I might listen to this again later, but really, i hardly
have had an album that really annoys me in all different
ways, so i feel this release is very close to the bin for
me.

..i just know someone out there is, again, brewing me the
"are you fucking deaf" kind of reply, or "you use the same
roland beats over and over again" bullshit, but let me tell
you there's a difference between repeating and overusing. I
usually pick the roland drummachines because they fit the
sound and mood of whatever i am making at that moment, or
they are a good 'replacement' kind of beats, kind of like a
pilot episode, that i can build 'the final beat' from. I
don't pick them because last time i made them sound so good
with a tight delay/retrigger effect that i'll use it again
on another track. I don't use effects of any kind because
they just sounded weird/good/heavy, i use effects where i
personally feel they belong. They emphasise the mood or
feeling of the track i'm working on, personally of course.
With this album, i frankly feel like every effect has just
been thrown in there because they sound cool and stringy and
weird and out of this world and technical.

You could say i don't get Jega's style (which i might), but
how can you tell me how to pick up someone's music? I think
i'm just rather tired of this type of stuff, and am just
harder to please than other people, when it comes to music.
I'm not hard at all to please, just harder.

Give it more days and more listens. I like it a lot now. It
was just a little jarring at first because it has such an
early 00s sound and aesthetic.

Fah, I wasn't going to say any of those things!

I've been toying with the idea that there are two kind of
receptions in listeners to this type of music.
And by this I mean music oriented around timbre, sound,
quality of sound and so forth.
I see this music as a subgenre of sound music, where the
focus isn't on melody, or even rhythm, it's on just abstract
sounds.
And I have noticed from many people that some people love
it, and other people usually comment on the lack of melody,
rhythm and that it's not a full song or even musical..

When you call this music "standard IDM" you are not really
explaining it fully.
There is something about the aesthetics of pure sound that
people don't seem to like, and i guess this is just because
they haven't come to a conscious conclusion and an emotional
affirmation that they love it and 'get it'

I feel that there is basically 3 types of songs. Percussive,
ambient and melodic.
Jega's album is very percussive, and some ambient, and I
guess that's harder for some people to like than melodic, or
even ambient.

That's the thing, i didn't say it's standard IDM, and i
explained fully what i didn't like about while listening to
ALL aspects of this album, and i know why some people like
it, and why some won't. I'm not out on comparing my opinions
with others or anything... I was thinking quite the same
thing as you did, with the 3 types of songs, though there
are probably some more but that is really more personally
assigned, and believe me if i said that i like all kinds of
songs. Hell, i can sit through KTPA 1 and 2 entirely while
doing other stuff and still listening. While this album
simply annoys me in many ways, all hopefully clearly
explained in my "review".

Not that i expected you to pull me down on my opinion on
this album though, i just wrote that incase certain fanboys
in the J.K thread would throw a fit again and call me deaf
for not being able to listen to music or something.

You made some interesting points though. Get on soulseek
some time also!

hehe. given this a few listens. really really like/d
geometry, but wasn't too excited due to the prolonged
hype/leak/samples. for the most part i really like volume 1.
a few of tracks here and there bore me, but tracks like
soulflute/girl/sakura/can't remember come across as totally
awesome for me. and it surprised me as well, how much i was
enjoying it. and volume 2 is sick. so overall, i'm really
happy with this release.
i have a feeling the only reason people aren't liking this
is because of the sega font.

Man I hate when people use glitch as a reason for not liking
something, its such bullshit, its an effect...its like me
saying I hate distortion. I personally don't use it since I
write on my mac side, but really man shut the fuck up. I
can render files down and cut up the sample and repeat copy
and paste over and over again by hand then slap on a lofi
effect, but why would I when I could use glitch. I think
its the way you use it that counts. I've heard people do
some awesome stuff with it.

If you want to talk about originality then quit using that
same excuse "he used db glitch therefore it sucks" nonsense

Actually, cutting up and pasting etc gives a different
effect than dBlue Glitch. This plugin has a certain sound to
it that you can pick out of any other 'glitch', and mostly
people sneak in the modulator effect, which immediately
gives away that it's that plugin again. But i agree, it's
quite dull to call a track shit when it has dBlue glitch,
but i can also understand why people would dislike it...
Maybe they're heard the plugin too much already and are sick
of it, or people like to hear an artist/musician actually
putting some effort in their music instead of using an
automaton like Glitch.

Find the Richard Devine opinion on this plugin.

This is actually where i personally think "Oh God, that guy
is completely all over everything that gives him automatic
access to something that can make random chaos of a good
piece of music" haha. Like, from now on, all the new tracks
Devine makes, have you thinking "did he write that himself?
or did he use that plugin?". Which is then a case of 'do you
care about what he uses, or what it sounds like?'. If an
artist/musician uses the 64 step sequencer, which usually
ends up in a repetition of the same glitch effects, i
personally stop listening, eventhough they sound perfect
with the rest, i like my glitch like an endless random
unpredictable assault.

i think it's pretty good.

it is a bit dated, and it is spotty, but being dated isn't
so bad always. i had a hard time with the BOC DJ scratch
effect track and some moments were better than others, but
there are some really cool, well produced moments also.
Nice pads and textures, the beats are intricate without
getting wanky at all, everything feels lush.

i understand hating on the glitch tho. it's the a&d
revolution. in a post-quaristice scene, any cutting,
splicing, or otherwise manipulating off the audio after it
has been recorded to track from the sequencer is not
allowed, especially not with a vst. where is richard
devine? when was his last album? otto von scirach is
making porno bass satan music. schematic is gone,
quaristice is out, glitch is dead. r. devine and otto
forgot that the melody is important. the a&d revolution,
safe as fuck. never acid again, but no, forever acid again.
