well I'm guessing they rotoscoped the players. and filmed an
empty moviestadium where they mimicked the cameramovement of
the original movies and then placed the players in the new
environment.

Nice one, wasn't aware of that technique.

Also into the music by Ludovico Einaudi.

I think the filmakers went back to the past when the
original footage was shot, and then asked the players nicely
to do it again in front of an empty stadium. Then they took
the original film and spliced that with the new film. Then
they came back to the present to advertise... what does this
advertise again? Something about Non Playing Characters?

Its not technically possible to just digitally remove the
stuff around the players and superimpose that image over an
empty stadium or anything.

Its also not technically true that that would be the simples
of all routes.

It sort of looks like they filmed an empty court from
exactly the same perspective as the original and then frame
by frame masked out certain sections, im not familiar with
film editing software but i imagine you could mask every
frame?

It sure is possible! Take a look at this one and
compare the amount of (relatively big) empty seats with the
audience once they are replaced. It just doens't look right
in propertion. Nevertheless, very well done!

Nice post Exaph :)
