what are your opinions on dj'ing with mp3's, traktor,
serato, ableton etc.

i have a set of vestax vci's and control traktor and have
pulled together a good number of solid sets but a few
friends of mine who strictly only use vinyl and turn their
head up at anyone using digital saying there is no heart and
soul in using digital, now i can see their point to a
certain extent but nowadays i couldnt care less if i was out
and the dj was using vinyl or mp3, personally for me if it
sounds mega then that should be all that counts.

i know there are alot of members on the board who use both,
the reason i bring this up is sheffieldbleeps sale of
serato.

thoughts please

with digital you can mix anything you bump into/make
yourself. i cant see the plus side to vinyl other than this
soul stuff, but i understand. anyway you weren't asking me,
im just looking for threads to bump

ok my thoughts..
vinyl mixing has had its day,i love it and love that it is
infact now retro
but in all fairness digital is better, and really more fun.
as long as you use some form of deck or decent controller
you can win people over.

i'm also a fan of the VCI,but i wish they would make a
bigger version with big fuck off platters.
thanks for listening,david.

cheaper, easier, more convenient and better for your back.

i love vinyl, but snobs who won't use anything else annoy
the fuck out of me.

djing on decks fun - using serato or traktor scratch allows
that fun to carry on in the digital age.

I love using vinyl but I have spent a pretty large sum of
money on them and I am kind of reticent to take them out of
the house with me. I don't mind using cd's but the interface
is a bit tricky for me to use. I love laptop djing as I have
so much more fun with it.

I guess when it comes down to it I don't care about the
format used as long what is coming out the other end is
decent. I am no snob when it comes to technique either.

i've had turntables for 18 years and its probably the most
enjoyable format to use, but i don't really care about the
medium, i care about the end result.

i don't play out, and simply do mixes for my own enjoyment
which sometimes i share on forums, so maybe that's why it
isn't important to me?

*shrugs*

for me, each has it's own level of enjoyment - for me
atleast. there's no future for strictly vinyl jocks, that's
just how it is, and people who still hang onto it, are
essentially the same sort of people who hated the electric
guitar for not being "real".
there is, however, a kind of magic being able to manipulate
the physical object that is a record. to some degree it's
being retained in using timecoded vinyl, but i still feel
that it's just a way of bridging the old with the new, but
not being superior to either. for digital jocking, the
controller is the new turntable.
with digidjing, its been easier for new kids on the block to
start putting tunes over eachother, with a pirated copy of
ableton and some tunes found on the net they have bypassed
the initial commitment that most of the vinylists have gone
through, to get a pair of decks and some records and then
hours of practice - and i believe that is the main core of
the disdain towards digital djs.
the most important thing in this is ofcourse the result -
the actual mix. i usually don't give a shit about how it's
made, as long as it's entertaining. but, i've found myself
being more forgiving about the technical faults of some
vinyl-only mixes, as it now is considered a kind of proof of
authenticity, whereas slip-ups on a digital one is just
sloppy and tells me that the dj needs more practice. for
those who have read this far, this is probably my thoughest
post on zilty so far, so i better stop before i turn into
dave_g or ceri.

to conclude, go vinyls go controllers and go computers. cds
are just wrong to mix with booo

i think thats what pisses them off so much, they have
thousands of quids worth of vinyl collected over a 10 year
period and i could basically get there entire back catalogue
in a nights worth of heavy downloading

the joys of the tinterweb

People who think that one technology has more soul than
another are not worth listening to.
