NO MORE GENRES, AND A CHANGE TO MUSIC

Genres are good for two things: marketing and heated
conversation. Its understandable, to a degree, why we have
it, and it makes finding music we like a bit easier, but in
the end all it does is cause division. Obviously there is
thick boarders between a country and western CD, and the
latest "Club Anthems", but essentially to the listener, no
matter what instrument is playing or whos singing about
what, it is only air vibrations that does stuff to our
brains via our ears.
To be honest I'd rather have much softer boarders between
all music. I feel this would be a giant step forward in how
people view music, and their current ideas about it. It
would also dramatically increase the creative scope from
newer bands. They wouldnt have to worry about choosing a
genre and sticking, and being restricted to it.
Ive seen so called "IDM" as a seed for this. The computer
has been well glued onto music, and it is the fastest
evolving and changing thing made by man. It is, and will
continue to drag up the music with it. I believe this giant
change will help smooth out bumps and scratches made by
countless disputes over "Genres" and "Sub Genres", and I
believe the "I" in "IDM" will increase, as blisteringly fast
as the capabilities of the home computer. I'm predicting
that in years to come, what people are feeding into their
ears for entertainment will be highly computer-processed, to
a degree we can only imagine what it could sound like.
In this evolution, perhaps people will look back on the
innovators of the day, such as Richard D James as important
classics, and mines of inspiration.
Please discuss and tell me what you think!

breaking down genres feels so idm.
anyway defined genres are something humanity did to classify
sound, it was obviously natural. cant we just listen and
stop talking?

This is the definition of IDM and this is
IDM too.

Well if you like IDM that's up to you. IDM has nothing to do
with career of aphex twin except some american kids on a
messageboard called him that, then they bullied other
messageboard kids to say the same. Luckily it is dying out
because of Analord showing the true path for the future of
music. Autechre fans will scream and cry and moan but they
will fail there is nothing they can do now hehehehe.

Very perceptive, but why do you limit such borders to
music?

If all music is, is "air vibrations that does stuff to our
brains via our ears.", then you can say exactly the same
thing about language/thought, which create exactly the same
divisions, boundaries and restrictions, and are equally
meaningless at the end of the day.

I think also software is a key for productivity and
inteligent music making. By possibility to use advanced and
intuitive "tools" we can make advanced "surgery" for sine
waves. Problem is that advanced tools is less intuitive
becouse it gives many options, and vice versa.

IDM is another lame-ass vibe-butchering packet genre, but
whoever made it was right about the "I" for intelligence
(IMHO of course).
But look how much the computer has accelerated medicine,
construction, production and so many other things. It must
do the same to music, and it already has begun, long ago.
Take a look at some Aphex Twin sheet music. It is
ridiculously complex to say the least. So long as the
computer chuggs along like a smoking train, the only way is
up.
Computerized vibrations can only get more intelligent.

about music, doesn't strike me as the best place for someone
who just likes to listen?

yea true, but somehow everyone agrees on what a chair is or
isnt, while agreeing on what is ambient or not is another
matter.
there is a subjectivity to music that everything else doesnt
have..

What does an advance in computer technology have to do with
genres? (hint: nothing.)

Anyway, organizational divisions in data are incredibly
useful. Are libraries causing unrest by separating fiction
books from non-fiction?

You're oversimplifying the matter by saying that all music
is just "air vibrations that does stuff to our brains." If
all you can discern when listening to Garth Brooks vs.
Autechre is the air vibrating, you might as well just give
up listening to music.

years and while great men were defining these 'borders' you
were still shitting in your hands and rubbing it in your

Electronic music can be simplified like this:

Aphex Twin - the Coca Cola of modern electronic music

Autechre - the Pepsi Cola of modern electronic music

Squarepusher - the Faygo of modern electronic music

Venetian Snares - the Jones Soda of modern electronic music

Drexciya - the Vitamin Water of modern electronic music

It's a matter of taste
