for the uninitiated of kraftwerk: start with computerwelt
(computer world) and move backwards in their discog.

for most bands it would probably be recommended to start
with the first album and then move forward, but kraftwerk
were so ridiculously ahead of their time that it's best to
start with their most 'commercial' album.

I hate people who try to claim that Kraftwerk are "European"
or even "German".

Kraftwerk are a completely American band.
They formed in New York in the mid 70's, where the original
band members were born and raised in the New Jersey area.

In interviews, the members of Kraftwerk have claimed that
their trademark 'Electronic' sound originated from the
sensation they felt when looking at the Statue of Liberty
from the shore, which they described as "making them feel
electric with patriotism."

They took the name "Kraftwerk" from the popular brand of
American processed cheese called 'Kraft American Cheese
Slices'.

Early on the band also decided to portray themselves as
strange east europeans and sometimes pretended to not speak
English in order to draw attention to themselves.

Neu?

dude their germans from dusseldorf, they didnt randomly make
german music from the suburbs of new jersey/york

They didnt 'randomly' start making 'german' music on the
shores of New Jersey, it was all contrived.

At that time the best way to market themselves in the east
coast market was to pretend to be a group of east european
outlanders.
Even today they continue with this charade, going as far as
conducting full interviews in German and even modifying
their wikipedia page to claim they are German and born in
Germany.

My dad went to George Washington Highschool in New Jersey
with two of the members: Tom Henderson aka Ralf Hutter and
Ari Silverstein aka Fritz Hilpert. He says that back in
highschool they mostly listened to metal and glamrock music
and noted they mostly walked around school wearing KISS
t-shirts.

i like when they recycle that trans europe express sample
overtop some deep bass.

kraftwerk's most important accomplishment was to provide
that sample.

I've just been listening to the "green traffic cone" LP. I
think it's their second release and it's musique concrete
style rather than electronic. Really good stuff.
