Due to mild boredom I've compiled a list of all the RPGs I've played on the PC- best to worst. Everquest 1 Might And Magic 6 Fallout 3 Diablo 2 Baldur's Gate World Of Warcraft Might And Magic 7 Final Fantasy 7 Elder Scrolls: Oblivion Planescape Torment The Witcher Diablo Fallout 2 Divine Divinity Knights of the Old Republic Fallout Neverwinter Nights Elder Scrolls: Morrowind Everquest 2 Dungeon Seige Arcanum Anachronox Knights of the Old Republic 2 Dark Age of Camelot Guild Wars Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall Asheron's Call 2 Anarchy Online Star Wars Galaxies (sucked so much ass) Pretty sure that's all of em anyway. I doubt I'd place EQ1 so highly if I were to play it today (it's been probably 7 or 8 years)-- but I still have nothing but the fondest memories of it. I'm currently playing the first Baldur's Gate for the first time-- awesome game so far. I've never played an RPG on a console, except for Pokemon (good), and Final Fantasy 4 DS (bad). Any other suggestions? I have Mass Effect and Fable on the list of games to play, but that's pretty much it. |

I think you will enjoy mass effect, because it's sort of a cross genre of FPS and RPG. if you liked pokemon maybe you might like viva Piñata, living Piñatas ..ahh well i guess they are trying to think of new ideas |

Well you had Fallout 3 in your list, which is about as watered down an RPG as you can get, so I think DX qualifies too :) |

It's close to qualifying- it's just missing the hundreds of side quest type deals that can keep you occupied for hours in a good rpg. I see it as more of an FPS with good depth. I should really play it again soon, it's been awhile. The combat mechanics were watered down in fallout 3 in the sense that they were almost purely FPS... but that game was pretty deep and packed with lots and lots interesting content. Wish the level cap was a little higher, I woulda kept playing. |

i used to be (and still am to some degree) a rpg geek. i've played all the single player games on your list, though i'm not that into mmorpgs. the first thing you should do after finishing baldur's gate is to play baldur's gate 2 with the expansion. for the love of god -- JUST FUCKING DO IT! in my opinion it's the most entertaining rpg on pc (along with fallout 2). sure, some rpgs have better story and character development (like planescape torment), but bg2 is simply the most fun rpg experience i've ever had on pc. |

That's a pretty solid list, but you owe it to yourself to play System Shock 2 at least once. Also, what am I missing about the Witcher that would make it a better game than diablo 1 or fallout 2? The first time i tried playing the witcher, I had a game-ending loading bug that wouldn't let me leave the swamp. I tried playing again when they re-released it but it didn't seem any better, really. I recently played through fallout 2 again, and it's easily the best RPG I've ever played (imo), so maybe the witcher just isn't my style of game. Also, if at any point in your life, you've dreamt of voyaging the galaxy, you ought to play Mass Effect. :) If you start itching to play a diablo-style game while waiting for diablo 3, give Titan quest and it's expansion a try. It's as solid a diablo-clone as there ever was. |

I've never finished a single PC RPG, though I've always been tempted to, and though I've played dozens of console RPGs. I keep on wanting to go back to Fallout, Neverwinter Nights or Baldur's Gate, but they all seem so old now, and the new stuff doesn't seem that interesting. |

yeah I forgot to mention that. As soon as I'm done with Baldur's Gate + expansion I'm exporting my character (a cleric) directly into BG2. Zeph: Good question. I liked Witcher a lot, despite its bugs and load times. I played it all the way through and I think I hit up most of the side quests. It had a great setting and great writing. Combat was challenging at times. That said, Fallout 2 may be the better game-- I haven't played it since it first came out. As far as Diablo 1 goes, IMO it was completely overshadowed by D2, in every respect. A good game when it came out but I probably will never play it again. |

Diablo 1 was absolutely overshadowed by D2, but I think it's worth noting that Diablo was at least playable all the way through without game-ending bugs on it's initial release. There might be a great game buried under the quirks of the Witcher, I just couldn't seem to find it. It would probably be untrue to say that diablo's point-and-click combat is more interesting than the witcher's, but for some reason I got bored almost immediately with the combat in the witcher. :( Seems to be my loss, most people like the game. Few direct comparisons can even be drawn between such different games, but I'll always love the dark and gritty atmosphere of diablo. The witcher seemed like it was really close to being great, imo. thanks for reading my wall o' text. |

if we're talking atmosphere though, arcanum's blend of industrial revolution technology and magic was always really appealing to me. I wish someone would make a sequel that keeps the spirit of the game intact but addresses the flaws of the original. |

yeah exactly. Arcanum gets an A+ for atmosphere but it is the least techincally playable game on that list (except for maybe Daggerfall). I believe fans have extensively patched Arcanum so it might actually be somewhat playable now. |

Ahh... I played KOTOR all the way through as an evil character. I just didn't feel like the storyline was conducive to being evil, as the quest was fundamentally good in nature. Also I felt it was a bit too linear and combat was somewhat lacking in dynamics. It had a pretty nice setting and interesting characters though. KOTOR 2 I played for a few hours and quit, it had all the same problems--- at least in the beginning. It's not really fair of me to "review" it though. |

Icewind Dale since you think so highly of Baldur's Gate, I love the remote atmosphere. Be a good game to tackle after BG2. I love the worlds and stories in these particular Infinity Engine games, but I usually play it on easy... the combat just boils down to identifying with outrageously annoying negative status effect your opponent is going to cast on you so you can defend against it after you reload, and maybe sometimes identifying what positive status effect they have on so you can pierce it. Some of the status effects make me want to fucking scream. |

It was overwhelming looking at the space map and viewing all the selectable destinations. Then visiting the earth's moon early, that felt great. Exploring a couple of barren planets and marveling at the nice skyboxes of their moons and suns, taking in their lonely atmosphere, traversing the landscapes, that was nice for a bit... but man, when you realize that there's like three interior building designs in the whole game copied over and over, and the ''missions'' on the planets are fetch-quest busywork repeated over and over, it gets so old. The story quest was detailed and had some beautiful sights, but it was so tiny. I watched someone beat it in one day. With such a small main quest and so many redundant optional quests, it felt low on actual content. Now that they have the engine and mechanics and everything established, maybe they'll be able to spend more time and resources adding finer detail to ME2's universe. |

I couldn't agree with you more. It may have a lot of recycled content, but very few games (none that I've ever played) capture space exploration and living characters. I'm willing to overlook mass effect's shortcomings because, to date, it's the first game I've found that has seamless conversations. I like that you can choose what you want to say before others have finished their lines, so the audio is cued up and ready to go. Plus I'm a sucker for high-res aliens. :) about icewind dale, I was going to suggest that wolf play both 1 and 2, but decided not to mention them due to the frustrating elements you mentioned. They are definitely great games, I just didn't feel like taking the time to explain why. I'd definitely recommend them both to anyone who doesn't mind playing a game with their finger hovering over the "quick load" key. |

already into the 3rd chap of BG2.... this game fucking rocks. BG1 was great, but the quests in 2 are way more fleshed out and dynamic... this has potential to take top spot on the list if it stays this good. |

i'm suprised you put anachronox so low - this is such an underrated game. i've just bought mass effect for £10 -it seems good so far but fuck me the menu system is clumsy- i'm more tempted to d/l daggerfall - infact i am downloading it right now |

anachronox was amazing at the time it was released. i actually redownloaded it a few months ago to replay it. oh and the last remnant was quite good. but i'm a square-fanboi. |
