depending on how you use it, it's very useful
if you use it to tell everyone the frequency and colour of your meals, then it's not useful

Twitter is even more evidence we are currently living in the golden age of mediocrity.

here's my take.
I currently know of 6 people who frequently update their twitters with very awesome, energetic material dealing with metaphysics, history, nature, and consciousness... The medium IS good (like oscillick said) for people who actually have a lot of data they want to throw out there for people to read. People who are constantly thinking hard about mundane things and pulling interesting details out of human life... I look at them like really sensitive human antenna, and this microbloggingsphere is the airwaves... they give you information you can actually use in your life after reading it. I like it a lot for that.
Now, twitter as for a tool to maintain your popularity.... holy fuck.. that is one house I would like to see burned down immediately. IMMEDIATELY. I'm amazed by how polarized twit-pages are. Either they are complete "Hey Guys I am having computer problems" type feces data or it's pure gold. For example, Shaquille O'Neal's was good until he realized people actually read it.
I can see people being sponsored by multinational companies to "twit" sometime in the future if it already isn't happening. Company says, "We'll pay for your plane ticket if you go to X place and twit about every single thing you see in detail. Don't worry, we'll edit it, you just go there and type away, we'll even give you a blackberry/laptop"
