I've got a d-link piece of shit at the moment that my isp gave me when i first joined up. I can't configure it properly so d/ling torrents just slows the whole thing.
I need an external hd to hold my movies, music etc but want tobe able to move around the house without dragging the HD with me. My mate has one plugged into his router.
I'm not up to speed with hardware so I'm hoping a tech-head will step in and tell me what to get :) I need Elusive to post in this thread!
thanks for the response

get your hands on an old neatgear wrt54g v5 or earlier, then load the linux firmware dd-wrt. it allows you tons more options (mac address-based ip filtering, better firewall preferences, in-router ad blocking, etc) and increases the stability of it as well.
just make sure to get one while is v5 or earlier, because after v5 they made it so you brick your router if you attempt to install third party firmware.

and is that easy to do, getting the firm-ware?
Is there nothing of the shelf that will do the trick?

by netgear i meant linksys, and no, there really aren't any stock firmwares which match the power of the open alternatives.
