My PC's really, really frustratingly slow.

Please give me some suggestions. Which one do you use?

imo don't. it's only slow starting up right? otherwise,
reinstall windows. you should only use it when you know what
you're doing, and when you do, you should go through all the
entries it want to remove

Registry cleaners can do more harm than good. Careful what
it deletes.

No, it's not just slow starting up. When I use the media
player it goes all jerky and stops for a second every now
and again. Pretty intolerable when I'm trying to watch DVDs.

I do agree with the point about knowing what one is doing
with regisry cleaners, though. I read some stuff about it on
another forum, but I was so eager to stop my computer being
sluggish, I just did it anyway, out of haste. I will take
more care int he future though, thanks.

Tell me about it!

I told it not to delete my internet history and it did
anyway.

450MB of stuff was deleted in all. Quite worrying... And it
still halts when it feels like it, every now and again.

might as well be the dvd-player, they always go to crap with
me

you could try not reinstalling, but another install on a
second disk you have, to test the dvd drive

i think you've set off the inevitable demise of your
windows, expect blue screens in the future
(not trying to scare you)

If its slow starting up try disabling all the programs on
start up. I have only one program that starts on its own and
its my virus scanner.

I won't worry- I have an external HDD, so if it fucks up i
won't lose anything.

I am going to install Linux soon, anyway. :)

you're system slows down eventually and you have to
reinstall windows because you install and remove all these
programs. if that doesn't happen with your mac or linux,
it's just because you don't install that much: there's not
so much cracks etc. well and maybe it's a better os. point
is, it's just natural you have to reinstall windows
eventually

if you have less than 4gigs of free space you might see your
system start to slow down considerably depending on how your
pagefile is setup. it is best to set it to a constant size
so it doesn't fragment and windows doesn't take time to
adjust the size. usually 2 GB is good. also turn off system
restore and indexing will speed up windows.

you can speed up your computer if you put your pagefile on a
different (physical) drive from your operating system drive,
also you can put it on both, and a third

LAZY_TITLE, maybe it's hardly noticeable though. it will
not solve other problems either.

I'm with Olrox on this one. I used to use Diskeeper for all
my defragging needs, until I let it defrag my registry, and
then suddenly I had no operating system. If your registry or
master file allocation table is 100% fragmented, basically
you need to just save your important data and reformat. All
of the knowledgeable people I've asked have said more or
less the same thing.
