Speakers Scam

Feel free to call me a gullible twat, but I just bought
some Definitive DST-303 speakers, which cost me £250. I was
told they were worth £1,999 each. In retrospect, I was a
fucking fool to believe such a thing.

I bought them out of a white van, which makes me look like
an idiot in the first place. I shouldn't have done it.

Later I Googled the speakers, to see how much I could sell
them for. (I asked and they didn't seem to be stolen). I
found the speakers to be part of a hoax, after visiting this
forum:

LAZY_TITLE

I am just saying this so that no one else falls victim to
the scam.

Be wary of stuff you buy out of white vans. :)

There was a white van in the grocery store parking lot last
week trying to sell plasma screen televisions. I figure
we'll see more of this as the depression worsens.

From what I read, they do work, but are certainly not worth
the price people pay for them. The sides shake apparently
and stuff like that. Prolly worth about £50 each, mebbe
less. They came without wires though, so I haven't tried
them out yet.

Compared to one guy on the forum I didn't get off too badly-
he paid £600 for his!

haha!

I will make a mental note of that. :)

Thing is, in a place foreign to me I would be expecting to
be scammed. Here I was caught off guard... :'(

They had official looking T-shirts and order forms for the
speakers.

nice pull!

friend of mine once bought a video-camera like this,
only to find out they had switched the bag and now
there were two sacks of sugar in his camera-bag...

i am noticing a raising level of this kind of stuff too.

example n.1: there were me and a friend eating munchies near
a petrol station, at one point a car stopped in front of us
and the guy who was driving babbled something i didn't
understand. so he came down the car and said 'my cash card
doesnt work, could you give me 5 euros to make some fuel?'
and i said 'you want me to give you 5 euros to make fuel'.
there were two girls in the back seats and when i look'd at
them, they turned their heads on the other side. then the
guy kept on crying 'cmon i know i am asking you a big
favour, i'll give you my number, i'll manage you a coke
snort' and shit like that, so i've lookd him in the eyes and
said 'you're lucky cos you give me the benefit of the doubt
and i don't give a fuck about money' and lend him the only
banknote i had, 10 euros. then he jumped in the car and fly
away w/o making any fuel. so my friend laughing at me said
'imagine if he's gonna buy some badly cut coke and die' and
i said 'man i shouldn't have done it'.

example n.2: the other day a granny stolen some broccoli
that were in special offer from my mother's trolley.

example n.3: the nearest tobacconist try to steal coins from
the change, but to be honest he always did that, even before
the crisis.

i did it too once..

the other day i turned down an armani suit though

those guys kind of hypnotise you into thinking it's a great
deal. i didn't really want the speakers, my room was way to
small for it, they offered was a surround set.

after not buying the suit i felt kind of guilty too, for
letting such a deal go, hehe. i'm certain now it was an
exact same scam though.

i put the things on e-bay and of course nobody bought them.
so i just threw them out. i didn't want to be reminded using
them as speakers with my computer or something

omg!

this *exact* same thing happened to a friend of mine... like
5 or 6 years ago?
even the van was a white van. the guys were making up a
story and my friend paid 600 Euros for a pair. The fake
speaker brand even had a fake website.

Thanks! :)

Yeah, I will really have to learn not to make big purchaces
when not in the open air, with people I have never met
before. That's the lesson I think we can all learn from
this. :D

But your friend must have been livid and really upset. How
much did he pay for what he thought to be a video camera?

lol.

One day I will be as cynical as you. Things like this scam
seem to try to lead me into becoming cynical as people like
you.

But until I fall into the pit of pessimism that you are
clearly fumbling blindly around in, I will dance in the
sunshiney fields without a care in the world. ^^

You fell prey to one of the oldest scams in the book.
Perhaps some cynicism would do you well...

i think he even paid em 1000 (thats one-thousand!)
deutschmark back then. (bout 500€)
cameras have been worth maybe 2000 dm back then.
my other friend told him NOT TO DO IT.

only thing i ever bought that was not the real deal
was some 20€ (lira back then) of hashish, which turned
out to be bark :D

There's a program in England called 'The Real Hussle'. I
suggest you download them all and have a look.

I'm selling the promo copy of the DVD set. It's not going to
get released anymore so it's gonna be uber collectable. Let
me know by e-mail if you're interested, I only want like
£10 for it.

Remember, if the deal looks too good to be true, it probably
is. I once went to one of those dodgy auctions held in the
function room of my local pub and it was amazing how much
junk was being shifted on unsuspected locals. The guys who
do it work the crowd really well and enthusiasm just bounces
from one another.

I'll never forget this guy stood next to me who said "i've
just spent £200 on a load of crap I don't need"

Just keep a level head and don't open you're wallet unless
you're 101% sure what you're buying it legit and worth it.

haha..i had the same thing 15 years ago! But I only paid
like 150 euroos. two guys working " delivering speakers and
equipment" told me " they had one pair to much and they had
to sell it immediately cause they were going back to the
store". I've kept the speakers for over 10 years and they
were ok though. But that was indeed the last time I've ever
bought anything out of a van.
