To write the perfect song, the writer must keep it to him/herself. If one writes a song that they are happy with, then it's good. It's perfect, right? But the moment someone who doesn't like it hears it, it loses it's beauty. So long as it sounds good to you and you are enjoying the process of hearing "creativity in action", for lack of a less faggy phrase.
Don't get me wrong, some songs are fun to share. But the good ones, the REALLY good ones, should remain unheard by anyone other than the producer.
Or am I totally insane?

What I'm thinking is, if theres a style song you want to hear, but can't find, then don't try to find it. Where's the good in listening to someone else make what you want? Why not make for yourself what you want and be happy with that?

in your warm cocoon of denial and vanity.

RDJ said something like "I don't release my best stuff, cos I will get ripped off." in an interview for the Guardian, I think it was.
Maybe that was in a similar vein to what you are saying.

Not so much worried about it getting ripped off, cause I'm not interested in making music for money. But yes, similar. I think he was very smart to say that.

you need to reassess your definition of "perfect." If it's truly "the perfect song" (not that such a thing exists), it would be universally accepted as perfect, above and beyond individual tastes and opinions.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh...point made and understood.
Forgive me for sounding "out there" with this, but who's to say that perfection has to be understood by all. Why can't something be perfect to just one person and let that be good enough?

It goes deeper than music too I guess. To not worry about what other people think and be happy with yourself in every aspect. If one person can do that, they have achieved the ultimate. If everyone could do that, the world would rock.

Yeah, I considered that. I think "perfect" in its purest/strictest sense would mean that on every level, no matter whom you polled, the song would be regarded as absolutely flawless. But I will not deny you the right to define perfection in music as you see fit. :)

It's really very simple.. All taste and experience originates ultimately in the brain, so there's a unique taste and experience to every stimuli, in every individual brain.
A song then, will be experienced and judged uniquely by everyone who hears it, even if people agree on certain points and opinions, the experience is ultimately unique to each person..
To disregard all other opinion is both a strength and a weakness really. Humans do not exist solely in their own head. While in many ways they do, there is also the intersubjective consciousness. We are at all times influenced by others, and this influences our taste in art.. If we're not influenced by words, we are at least influenced by others music.
While ultimately my experience of music is completely unique, it carries remnants of many other musicians before me.
Consciousness and taste are not things that are developed in solitude, and this is why we have intersubjective consciousness..
But even so, the person who hears the song is ultimately the only judge capable of judging the song for them, as such their opinion is the only one that matters to their experience of the song..
I feel that it's a bit selfish to not share songs that you like. What if Autechre never shared Uviol, what if Radiohead never shared pyramid song and (horror) if Bola never shared Forcasa 3!
Nope sir, the best thing you can do as a musician is to realize that there's going to be a ton of negative, and maybe many more positive comments, but that ultimately those comments should not ruin YOUR experience of the track, and as such the track loses no beauty.. There is no objective beauty or quality to music, only intersubjective.

maybe one day we could share the part of the brain that enjoys music, then we'd be able to see strict Christian choir singers getting down in the sweaty mosh pits to death metal.

It's not so much about the music, as it is about the attitude.
If you have a detached and relaxed outlook on music, then it would follow that you could listen simply for the sake of enjoyment - no matter how 'perfect' or 'pure' a piece of music may be.
If we're clear as to the premises of Why we listen, we wouldn't make such a fuzz about it, either, and the consequences that follow (the ridiculous outrages, the elitism, etc, etc).
It's never been about 'understanding' anything. Understanding may 'heighten' the joy by interpreting it intellectually, but by the end of the day we just like how it sounds...
Now as for me, I'd agree with ampi max.
