100 years new music?

I heard an interview with a music professor on my local
classical music radio station. And he said that 20 out of 30
students can't name one composer of the 20th century
(Stockhausen/Xenakis etc)
Thats sad. But hey, I can't name one 1 composer of the 19th
or the 18th century. Can you (without wikipedia)?
And why is 'new music' after 100 years still 'new music'
anyway

naming one composer from the 19th or 18th centuries is easy.
if you can't name one from either than your education is
very poor.

honestly, wagner, beethoven, brahms etc.? it's so easy.

But you asked a better question, why 100 year old music is
called "new music"... I think it's because most concert
music these days is still rehashing ideas that were
developed at the beginning of last century (atonality,
serialism etc.), and because most innovation happens in the
field of pop/rock/electronic music.
