I recently got in an argument with a friend of mine on
which artist we thought was more of a genius or "Smarter".
Of course I said Richard. (But i do like Trent Reznor) What
is your opinion on this subject?

RDJ..definetly
Trent's extremely masterful craftsman..but a tad methodical
and hence predictable..and he really must exorcise his angst
fast before he becomes a bigger cliche than he is..its
getting tedious

they both seem intelligent yet emotionally unstable imo. no,
i take that back, only trent seems emotionally unstable. RDJ
seems more modest than trent maybe, so i'd go with RDJ.

this one is very hard for me...especially since trent got me
into IDM with his nothing record label. they are both
genuses, but trent does lose points for copying oghr for his
live set...and then again richard practally doesn't have a
stage presence...

I'm going with trent...i feel that the downard spiral (even
thought it's somewhat comercialism) is better than any rdj
abulm. and he has a better sence of atmosphere and mood. i
feel that rdj is a song programmer, and trent is a song
writer...and in my experiacne, writing songs is a lot
harder, and takes more skills.

hmm. my opinion isn't concrete, but i remember how much i
used to dig NIN. & that was just b4 i discovered electronic
music (NIN technically is tho)

I like Trent, but forsome reason, NIN is somewhat cheesy to
me... but really good, still... but so much of his stuff
kind of rubs me the wrong way, kind of cringe worthy. I
don't know. I'm confused in regards to how I feel about
Trent.

if i wasn't so electronic heavy.. i'd totaly say trent in an
instant...but it's because i love electronic so much that i
had a hard time dismissing rdj...i'm still thinking about
this one...

GREAT DEBATE windowlicker!

Trent once but Trent turned down the offer?

i don't think that is true...trent would most likely do it.
the question is who would open for who? trent loves idm, and
has a mojor respect for rdj, that's why he's tried to bring
IDM to america. bands like coil/autechre/squarepusher have
american contracts with him under nothing records. check
this site for a complete list...

I RDJ is a clear winner... but Trent is a very talented
individual... differnt music so hard to compare... I really
like Trents new work... especially "Things Falling Apart"
and the "Perfect Drug Remixs". But i get board of it quickly
and rdj has a much better replay value.... it must be
sumwhere around eternity XD

things falling apart is a boreing cd...it has some luster,
but it's mostly just tracks with wannabe idm overtones and
wired wannabe idm noises. he even collabrated with telephon
tel aviv for a track on there.

i think trent's work should be measured by his abulms, and
not his remix abulms. His remix abulms are just new ways to
look at his previous stuff. I've also like the fact that nin
is one of the only projects that uses remixes to re-invent,
and not to re-sell...

RDJ seems to have more range than Reznor. Plus, RDJ doesn't
have a producer or anything like that, he does it all
himself. Am I right? I know Reznor has full creative control
over what he does. And people say NIN is Trent, but he does
get help. Aphex Twin truly is a one man show.

Back to range. Richard can create some of the most beautiful
ambient music i've ever heard, and also the hardest, most
evil shit i've ever heard in Come To Daddy. And everything
in between it seems, electronic wise. He's shown even more
range with his most recent album, which a good portion of it
being pianoey tracks.

Trent has also created an ambient track, but that was more
or less a cover of David Bowie's song "Crystal Japan". I
don't know if he can create an entire album of original
ambient music, much less a double disc of it.

Don't get me wrong, I love NIN as much as the next guy. But
when it comes down to it, Richard takes the cake in the
creative genius department.

Both artists are miles above most of today's musicians.

rdj is a lot more creative/innovative, but i like trent
more. nin got me into idm, and trent seems to care more
about his fans than rdj does. but i think rdj has a more
promisinf career ahead of him.

actually if you go and put a quake 1 disc in your cd-player,
and skip track 1 you will witness hte "forgotten halo" as
i've so dubbed it. it's about 10 tracks of bad ass distro
dark ambient, that really proves that trent is the god of
distortion, by manipulating it into something soooo ambient,
and score-like...

Trent is slightly better imho and from the ambient stuff
i've heard over the years from nin (esp nis new stuff) if he
made an ambient album it would be as good as anything RDJ
could make.

offline TrevorGod from Toronto (Canada) on 2002-03-30 12:27 [#00150399]

Trent is playing out a tired old formula and has shown
almost no evolution. His music was great 10 to 5 years ago
but he hasn't done anything worth wile since then. The
Perfect Drug was a good start but he stopped that chage
after that 1 song and The Fragile couldof been written 14
years ago by Front 242. Whereas RDJ is constantly evolving
and making new and exciting music.

i think the new NIN stuff is "new and exciting" music. Since
hearing the Still cd i'm really looking forward to what he
does next.

i always felt Trent always evolves from album to album but
each to their own.

offline TrevorGod from Toronto (Canada) on 2002-03-30 12:38 [#00150411]

When did you start lisning to NIN I thouhgt I read on a post
somewhere you got into them in 2000. If that's true... Of
course you still think it's "new and exciting" you haven't
been lisning to it for very long at all.

The only evolution has come from PHM to TDS. And that was
only because he became a full 'band' and had money to buy
new equipment. The songs were the same except they were
drentched in distortion.

As you said though, to each their own.

yeah from 2000, though if you haven't heard the Still cd you
can't dismiss their new stuff and make claims that he isnt
progressing.

I have heard 'Still' and I stand by my claims. For me
'Still' is too little to late. One limited release after
shite like "The Fragile" and "Things Falling Apart" isn't
going to bring NIN back ito my good books. Live albums like
"and all that..." don't do anything for me either. It's
like sying "Hi there kiddies, I want your money but I don't
want to do any work for it."

offline pantalaimon from Winterfell (United Kingdom) on 2002-03-30 12:56 [#00150425]

how is Still too late? The new album should be out this year
and it could be excelent.

Your opinion on the Fragile is just that an "opinion", i
must admit its an aquired tasted and takes a while to get
into but i wouldnt say it was shite.

"Hi there kiddies, I want your money but I don't
want to do any work for it."

if that was the case wouldnt he have got someone else in to
do the live DVD for him instead of working on it himself??
Also he didnt have to make the "still" cd, he could have
just worked on the new album but he wanted the aatchb
release special. Have you seen the packaging on the special
edition cd? if it wasnt for Trent's care for the fans it
probably would have just been a jewel case.

Don't get too upset now... I, like you, am just stating my
opinion. Trent is something like 37 years old. It's time
to stop acting like a pissed off 17 year old. It's no
wonder Trent and Fred Durst don't like eachother. They are
both 30+ trying to act like pissed-off teenagers and the
market ain't big enough for the both of 'em.

Still is too late for me because I just don't listen to NIN
anymore. You can't kick someone in the teeth with a frozen
boot and then appoligize 4 years later. And the sound on
The Fragile might be an aquired tast but i aquired that
taste 15 years ago and it's long past it's best before date
now. And... Live CD's and DVD's are right up there with
Greatest Hits packages for the big corporate cash grab.

Trent won't let go of the image he has created that became
bigger than life, which isn't uncommon in the music
industry... he just seems to be a parody of himself now,
obseesively overproduced ... Fragile is not terrible, i just
don't care anymore...

i read in an interview and Trent was whining and blaming his
record company because the fragile didnt sell 10 million
copies... maybe it was because it was an overpriced 2Cd with
no hit singles, and you waited too long to finish the
record... crybaby

Yeah, that angry image he projects turns me off... I get the
sense that RDJ just doesn't care at ALL how people see him,
which is great. He's free to literally do ANYTHING he wants,
artistically. He doesn't have to worry about what image his
music fits... you can tell he makes it JUST for himself.

new nin ep 'still' is mostly organic ambient, fucking
BRILLIANT too. do NOT count out trent reznor, he is a total
genius like RDJ. they make different music. i don't think
RDJ could do a lot of the stuff trent does and vice versa.
incomparable artists in terms of who is better.

i agree with you. you cant really compare both of them
together. it's kind of like asking who's better, the
beatles or rdj.
