merzbow albums are just snapshots of the shit storm that is his musical output, which itself is undifferentiated and monotone

the only one i have is pinkream. it is intense to put on very loud. it kind of colors your perception like good ambient music does, just in a more raw and urgent kind of way.
the stuff he did with christoph hemann was supposed to be good, and a bit more subdued since hemann does mostly drones and ambient.

jeez.
the best thing you could start off is the merzbox. you could search for some decent torrent of it.

Go see him live if you can, but remember to bring some decent earplugs. I've seen him live three times and it's mighty impressive, if you surrender to it.

saw him twice without earplugs and i can still hear. loved it both times as it were two quite different shows. the second one was probably the most brutal/extreme exercise in sound/music i have ever heard.

i don't think he did. 90% of people were covering their ears.. so i guess that was good enough for him.

heh :> i'm asking because when he was playing in wroclaw, after he stopped me and a bunch of friends started screaming "masami" for about then minutes and as our voices where getting lower just because of the fact that we just couldn't scream louder he suddenly went back on stage and gave a 15 minut encore which i was still feeling in my ears 4 days after :>
i think he even smirked as he went back on stage

It's probably best to start with his later material, as it's a lot more tonal and non-abrasive than his earlier stuff. Essentially, this change in aesthetic is marked by his transition from analog to digital composition (he's an advent use of SuperCollider, mind you).
My favorite works of his from this era include Merzbear, Pulse Demon (produced by John Zorn on his Tzadik label), and you could even give Merzbeat a try for some rhythmic material.
Good luck!
