what?
i was hoping for a discussion about what analogue / digital actually means aesthetically. Because the idm hasn't discussed this properly yet, srsly.

blaard mate you've just summed up the entire point of the genre is to question what parts of analogue and what parts of digital we should chase in our electronic music. for that reason a&d is the best new genre to come out in a while.
heres what a&d means to me as a genre. theres room for discussion & disagreement though. basically i see a&d as the future genre for anyone who is interested in electronic music.
ELITE uses for analogue in electronic music:
* Filters. * Audio circuits in synthesizers. * Multitrack audio mixers. * Noise. * Oscillators. * Recording & playing back magnetic tape on a high quality tape deck.
* 180 gram high quality vinyl played back on a record player.
ELITE uses for digital in electronic music:
* Chip tunes & old tracker music. * Speech synthesis. * Digital noise generators with timbre control. * Sampling. * FM synthesis such as on the Yamaha DX & TX synthesizers.
* MIDI control (sysex is useful). * Elaborate CV/gate sequencers & CV/gate <> midi interfaces. (V/Hz too)
* Crazy DSP effects. * Pure data, Max/msp, Supercollider, & Reaktor. * Spectrum analysers.

okay here's acrappy sketch for some sort of manifesto:
dump analogue completely, you can always come back to that stuff later. Dump anything on your screen and from your mind that simulates analogue interfaces or tries to emulate analog sounds. Kick Ableton Live in the nuts, it is crap for kids. Study a low level computer programming language along with electronics and learn how to build your own interfaces using sensors/lights/screens/microcontrollers. These have to learn to sense the environment, get into contact with you and anybody else on the planet. Don't worry about people calling you artsy, they just don't get it. It is about defining what digital IS. it is independent from material, it is code, language, it is not ADSR, it is not timbre. You are designing processes, sound is secondary. It is about network, nodes, communications. A digitally constructed microcosmos, much closer to cosmos then any other artform done before. We got rid of classical music theory, now it's time to get rid of classical ways of how sound is generated. It is happening anyway: myspace, last.fm, iPhone, all that jazz. Let the industry have their fun with it and be yourself part of its development. LOL!

"Analog and digital" is simply electronic music, its same. What is the difference?
Analogue sounds can be produced by digital circuits, but digital code cant be reacreated like music without analogue equipment, becouse as soon as you start to play with "sines" it is analogue, signal must be amplified and so on. Analogue can stand alone without digital, but digital without analogue technologicly is irrational decision. Digital is for control and calculation only not the music, it only helps create it its instrument. You can build huge circuits without digital electronics, but is simply irrational, unless u create electronics witch is based on difrent calculation and counting system. So if I build circuit witch is based on difrent system but produces equaly the same sines using same software it must be renamed according chunky.
*I dont like genres becouse it is mess*

i've been living in this world for 5 years now, which means, from this thread on, i'm living 5 years in the future. Punk bands will be dead or only covering squarepusher and aphex twin, pop music will have considerably loads more electronic edges in them, more raunchy, and they even go back to 90's style a bit but in a new coat, there are no more tb303s for sale since all the people that need them finally have one and don't want to get rid of it (yay!), modular synthesizers grow smaller and smaller again, 8-track and 16-track recorders are being re-produced by Philips, Akai and also by Behringer (which are really crap by the way, sound like shit these things), MTV has partly become a nu-rave channel, partly because there are of course loads of other genres to be heard but nonetheless all with more electronic music edges, basses will be louder with better fuses so they never fail, and i could name you loads and loads and loads more stuff but i left something on the stove 5 years in the future and i warped back for a few minutes to check the board and catch the same thread again to give a mention to people what the future looks like. I change it up every time, it's funny to see the reactions.
Until next time, will take pictures!

Electronic music >> Analogue & Digital
A&D is my favourite genre
Yes it does go back in time, beyond 5 years ago to the beginning of electronic & computer music. We all love electronic music. However the name only solidified into the current genre with its strong philosophy recently and is brand new. Analogue & Digital is the genre where us who were always interested in exploring electronics and music can get pissed and sloshed and have a laugh.
The main idea of A&D: Make electronic music for its own sake
'Electronic music' was always too general because you can say Trance comes under electronic music, but with A&D it defines our electronic music culture better and allows us to think freely instead of copying other artists. Weaker genres are full of copycat idiots but A&D has always encouraged people to merely copy and steal without being at all original or unique

correction of that last sentence:
Weaker genres are full of copycat idiots and have always encouraged people to merely copy and steal without being at all
original or unique. A&D encourages people to pursue their own path and to be yourself, not to pretend you are somebody else

I don't agree with this. I find it the reverse; I think analog synthesis is only done for a type of "signature sound", similar to how analog technology is utilized in other audio mediums (recording and playback).
I can sculpt any sound, waveform, filter system, etc., without ever needing to touch a piece of analog gear, all by programming. And, I'm not limited by the number of oscillators, filters, envelopes, patch cables, etc., which bears an obvious disadvantage for any analog synth hobbyist who ISN'T a billionaire.
And not just that: the mere laws of physics severely limit the possibilities analog synthesizers are able to achieve. Sure, nobody would have said that 30 years ago when Moog synthesizers were all the rage, but now that we do in fact have the capabilities to utilize NON-MUSICAL variables in compositions, the whole human-instrument relationship the electronic musician shares with his gear has changed. A whole new philosophy on composing electronic music is emerging thanks to digital technology.
I think it is rather ignorant to proclaim that digital synthesis cannot ever be more than a substitute for analog synthesis, especially when you consider the fact that there's literally not a single sound that an analog synth can produce that a computer cannot recreate. Even the instability of analog synthesis (as produced - understandably, and not to its detriment - by the physics of electronic circuitry), which gives the warmth and fatness attributed to the "analog sound", can be rendered and recreated by algorithmic programming through modern digital synthesis infrastructures. And, in fact, this is a rather popular practice among electronic composers utilizing digital synthesis. I've done it a lot in my own work.
