unlistenable genius?

okay, there are some artists i respect very much. when
they have something to say, i take them quite seriously, and
listen. i try to understand their statement. there are few
musicians i really respect for their artistry, but among
them are pat metheny and aphex twin. both of these guys, i
believe are geniuses. pat metheny came out with a solo
album in 1992 or 1993 called Zero Tolerance for Silence.
This features pat on a distorted feed-back laden guitar,
there is nearly no melody, rhyme or reason to the whole cd,
at least to someone like myself who has not studied music
theory, etc.

i find aphex's VENTOLIN kinda like that, too. i mean, it is
unlistenable (it is asthetically not pleasing), but it has
something to it that makes me not dismiss it as rubbish.
there must be more examples of this that some people have on
this mb. perhaps you could talk about it a little?

what about john cage's 4'33" which is just john cage sitting
at the piano and not playing... let's hear it from you
people... what do you think?

I think Zero Tolerance is awesome.

I like it a lot now, too. but i like it because i listen to
it in a different mode that when i am listening to say, We
Live here.

4'33 is the same as BOC s magic window, It's about the
present, what's happening NOW, all the real ambient sounds
around, I think it's cool as concepts go but like I'm
explaining it, it's a bit patronising.....

and i must admit, it is rare that i will put it on, but when
i do put it on, it is more of a meditative state. i just
let the music be, and i don't try to get into it, i just
"be" with the music, if you understand. when i hear, say,
as falls witchita, i can actually interact with the music.
ztfs is one where i separate myself, and just become a
partner, whereas i "become one" with other pmg stuff.

first off, ventolin is pretty tame compared to other tracks
ive heard. ventolin has a rythm and all that, the samples
are just loud and distorted which makes it difficult to
listen to.

john cage's 4'33 is cheesy i think, although quite
hilarious.

a side note - last semester i took a music class and my
teacher was lecturing us on john cage. Then he was like
okay, now i will play you a john cage piece on the piano,
and right then i knew what he was going to do, he sat and
sat and everyone was looking at each other. It was some
tightness, he was a cool teacher.

This topic reminds me of a quote by lou reed about "metal
machine music" - "If you make it to side 4 you're dumber
than I am."

ambience is nice it's kinda like your mom when she wakes up
and first thing she does is turn on the tv so she doesn't
feel all alone. just to hear the randomness of the voices
is like comforting to her. so when i listen to ambience i'm
usually busy doing something, it gives a nice atomsphere to
the room without taking away any of my attention.

trout mask replica by captain beefheart
to the untrained ear this album may seem as though either
the musicians are not trying or they are just making it up
as they go along
i can assure you they spent 9 months locked up in a house
rehearsing, with beefheart himself only letting 1 person out
at a time for groceries etc.
perhps my favourite album of all time, absoulute genius
check it out

pat metheny - prog rock star of the 70s turns wacko super
perfection musician of the 80s with his custom 48 string (i
kid you not) guitar. i have an album by steve reich & pat
metheny called different trains (i think) which is great
(about 1988)
the orb sampled part of one of the tracks (with no credit to
him) for their opus little fluffy clouds

Old boredoms stuff is very much like this. The latest stuff
is very organized and directed in it's intensity, but the
old stuff is like "noise, crash, random off key guitar riff,
silence, screams, blah blah" yet i do respect it loads and
enjoy it on occasion.

oh, i think that song was actually written about my house,
below the missouri sky, i gave them the rights, they paid me
14 dollars.

Are you thinking of Allan Holdsworth? Metheny was playing
borderline traditional Jazz in the 70's with Gary Burton.
What are you talking about with the prog rock?

Industro Garage Beats has a beat but it's the kinda of thing
that would make ravers sick, so it's good...
That and it's pure madness anyway...

Unlistenable songs, eh? Anything and everything by Noisex
or Merzbow. Hmm, I find "Never Enough" by The Cure to be
unbearably dull and crazy. The instruments don't sound
right with one another.

merzbow and other jap noise artists i can understand, but
noisex? do you even know who thay are? they aren't even
noise...just a little cheesy underground industrial band who
became somewhat popular by opening for vnv nation. do you
honestly think that a band that had unlistenable sound,
would open for such a poppy act like vnv?

could not hear any Pat Metheny samples in it... can you tell
me more about what you mentioned, please?
