Antichrist, Lars Von Trier

My brother saw a screening of this film a while ago, and he
said it was the most insane mindfuck of a movie he had ever
seen. It made him so physically ill and confused that he
could not manage to fill out the feedback cards afterwards.
Starring Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg, i've really
begun looking forward to this movie.

This might be the return of a great movie director, so keep
your antennas out for this one!

I always felt that Lars von Trier would be PERFECT for a
horror film. And now we have one!

I hope it gets put out in the US soon...

Ooo!

Plus

I have a request

If you ever find yourself flipping through DVDs down there
in Denmark, and you happen to come across Besat (from 1999),
could you let me know? I've been looking for it for ages!

I'm glad to hear i'm not the only one.

As my brother described it, usually when you see a horror
film its usually either built on mostly suspense with a
little gore, or the other way around. This one just has it
all to an insane level. It has that Lars Von Trier
unpleasantness, combined with some extreme, yet un-funny
gore. Also, the level of suspense is constant, making you
feel like you have to shit yourself the entire movie.

And hey, Drunken Mastah, ill keep that one in the back of my
head when i go DVD shopping.

i think von trier is a über-pretentious and self-absorbed
megalomaniac and this is reflected in his movies. and don't
say "oh but he's a genius and his movies are so good".

NO, they are not THAT good and he is NOT a genius.

it's not that i don't like experimental movies, because i
most definitely do.

but i think a lot of von trier's stuff seem kinda forced,
and i can picture him wanking furiously while writing
another experimental "masterpiece".

dogville actually made me vomit in my mouth, and then images
of von trier wanking his one inch penis flashed before my
eyes.

no, i just don't like him and his movies.

24-carat shit, what's that supposed to mean? a back handed
way of being actually excellent?

goDel says:
>24-carat shit, what's that supposed to mean? a back handed
>way of being actually excellent?

It means utter shit, as shitty as shit gets. Trier is
apparently deranged. From interviews the last years his
depression has been obvious. Unfortunately it (unlike
admired and dedicated Tarkovsky's) doesn't seem creatively
productive. Please explain what qualities you see in this
movie.

staz says:
>no, but i'm quite sure you are!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Staz is a negro.

Well... It's a strange movie. It's not as sick as some
japanese exploitation stuff, but considering the artsy
audience that will see this, it's pretty far out. It's also
extremely beautiful at times, visually stunning. I'm not
sure what to think about Trier in general (He certainly made
some shitty movies), but this is some of his best work
alongside The Kingdom (Riget) IMO. I'd advice people to see
for themselves, its worth your time even if you hate it.

Everyone should see The Kingdom by the way. Its scary and
hilarious, and you will learn a lot about danish culture,
including our relationship to Sweden, and how they often
(and rightfully so, unfortunately) claim superiority to us.

Denmark is the world's greatest colonial power.

Riget is great but the humour's ultimately tributed to (the
SWEDE) Ernst-Hugo Järegård. For the rest, it's a Twin
Peaks CC. I like the new-take on Medea, the dreaminess and
Tarkovskyesque aesthetics of Element of Crime. Europe is
good but then again foremost thanks to Järegård. The 90's
feminist melodramas all suck, Dogville revitalized minimal
scenography and intelligent critique, though duller I found
Manderlay even sharper. Direktören för det hele was funny.
Antichrist is a work of a torn-apart depressant. Its
aesthetics was beautiful, however unoriginal, stolen from
Sokurov rather than Tarkovsky. Russians have filmed this way
in almost fifty years, why the great impression now? Trier
is a punk and should do punk movies.

''Having tortured her husband, Gainsbourg's madwoman then
turns on herself, and, in the scene that so enraged the
critics at Cannes earlier in the year, cuts off her clitoris
with a pair of rusty scissors - all this in graphic,
lingering detail.''

Fucking hell.

watched it last night. as expected, the cinematography and
photography was absolutely beautiful, but the story was a
little bit thin and the characters not all that interesting
if i'm being honest, especially considering the fact they
were the only two in the entire film (over 2 hours)

the violence was nowhere near as bad as made out, but it was
VERY explicit... full on penetration (don't very artfully
though, which is probably how it passed the censors uncut)
and that masturbation scene was pretty much pornography, if
it wasn't for those pretty trees in the background. only one
scene had me cringing and that involved a penis and some
blood... i'll save the rest for your imagination.

definitely not his best work and about a million miles away
from riget, but still probably worth watching, if only for
the visuals. i doubt i'll watch it again.

After pining it over for 24 hours, I have got to say that
this was "quite good", despite the utterly retarded hype and
focus on genital mutilation. That was 3 sec of the fucking
movie for (anti)christ's sake. At any rate, the
cinematography was fucking glorious, I liked how it was
broken into chapters, I liked the acting and the minimal
cast, i liked the tension that i felt during the majority of
this. It was not over 2 hours though... it clocked in at
about 1 hour 45 min... at least my version (it has the
timecode on top, and the occasional "for promotion only".
It didn't seem cut because I saw all the penetration and
penor vag action...

At times he tried to do some Lynchian moments. Some he
pulled off good, others not so well. Overall 8/10. Good
psychological horror.

hungover to bother going to cinema in the end. I have since
seen a little bit of it...long story. What i did see looked
great, so guna download it when i get round to it.
