3 different people to try to get the router hooked up, and
none of them could do it. Anyone else have a problem with
this??? I went as far as to call comcast, and they'll send
someone over tuesday evening to hook it up for 50$ if I
can't do it myself by then.

Anyone else use comcast? I know the router works so it has
to be something with the modem, or the setup of the modem
right?

Help please??? i want to get on xbox live asap, and go on
my laptop in my bedrrom without stealing my neighbors
internet.

what is your problem, exactly?

is your linksys router obtaining a public internet address
from comcast's DHCP servers?

on the private/LAN side, what is your computer's IP?
(dhcp?)
your linksys should be doing NAT as well.

you provide no information to help troubleshoot

your dns may not be working

open command window
type:

ping www.google.com

does it resolve an IP address?
does it ping?

can you ping 4.2.2.2 ? (ping the ip directly).

take some screenshots of your router config (log into it via
http), did it pull a public address from comcast DHCP?

does your pc pull a NAT'd address (internal/private)?
can you ping the linksys (usualy 192.168.1.1), ?

you dont provide nearly enough information to help you
troubleshoot

ok here's some more details:

she has had a windows desktop running vista hooked directly
up to the comcast modem, connecting via dhcp. however, this
computer is the only one which will connect to the internet
using the modem. neither the linksys router nor two other
laptops could connect to the internet when connected to the
modem.

i tried cloning the dns servers which the desktop was
connecting using, as well as cloning its mac address from
the router, and nothing would work.

altho i am thinking now, you might still be able to connect
using opendns.

connect the modem to the router via the "internet" port (NOT
one of the 1-4 ethernet ports, altho the internet port is an
ethernet port as well.

then log into the router via wireless (linksys with full
reception, i'll fix that next time in up). go into firefox
and go to the address 192.168.1.1 the username and
password are both admin.

on the first page about halfway down there should be three
fields for static dns 1-3. input the following three
addresses in this order:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
4.2.2.1

then save changes, unplug the router and plug it back in.
then restart your computer.

good luck!

it's a linksys wrt54g, possibly the most standard router
ever, and all of the setting should have been left in the
standard config.

often this works for me.

turn off and unplug everything.
start pluging back in, in order of the source
modem-router-computer.
most of the time it will fix it.

can you get internet just from the modem, w/o router?

if u get on xbox live i will last stand u w/ my pistol.

i'm not there right now dude, and fat chance getting jessie
to take a screenshot for you.

and i wait 30 seconds before plugging routers/modems back in
when power cycling.

you can get the internet directly from the modem on only ONE
computer, two different laptops and the router were unable
to connect using it. i've checked all the settings on the
connectible computer and there doesn't seem to be anything
out of the ordinary, all identical to the settings on both
other computers.

THE MAC FROM THE LOCAL INTERFACE REGISTERS WITH THE MODEM

EVERYTIME YOU CHANGE A DEVICE CONNECTED TO THE CABLE MODEM,
YOU MUST REBOOT THE MODEM!!!

power down
wait 30s
power up
connect new device (router).

do you people not fucking read? i've already said i power
cycle everything when making new connections! this is not
the fucking problem.

and in case you are that dull, power cycle = rebooting in
industry speak.

have you discussed this with your ISP? (im not re-reading
the thread).

and don't call me dull, im trying to help you. i build
campus backbone networks, i don't think it's nice for you to
be talking down to me when im trying to help you.

come back and talk in this thread when you are in front of
the device so we arent wasting time/speculating...and
provide screenshots. we cant troubleshoot shit unless you
give better details of router config.

this is not MY setup, thus i can't talk to MY isp.

i'm just talking down because now twice i have had people
tell me a simple power cycle should solve it when that
clearly isn't the case.

i mean seriously i said "i wait 30 seconds before plugging
routers/modems back in when power cycling" and your super
helpful response was "power down, wait 30s, power up,
connect new device (router)."

and i'm just trying to help as well, i was over there trying
to get this to work and couldn't and i'm just providing all
the details i can because jess doesn't know shit.

i actually did read everything first, but decided to give
obvious advice anyway ;)

in seriousness, did you see this part of the article
fleetmouse posted?

Update: (10/19/2007)
I got an email from someone who describes a problem (and
solution) that sounds exactly like the sort of thing my
steps above would work around:

I had a problem w/ a friend’s Comcast hook up. I read your
article. I could connect to the router but not surf. The fix
was simple. The idiot’s at Comcast forgot to change the
type of service from “ to HN (Home network). It seems the
that when you use the linksys you are considered to have a
“Home Network” and it has to be changed to a different
setting. When the tech figured this out (after 1 ½ hours on
the phone) and we got it changed, the service was fine.

The problem started when my friend switched from just
Comcast high speed to their triple play. They had to switch
out the regular modem for the linksys. The installer came in
and got it working. It worked for a few days then it stopped
working. For some unknown reason someone must have undone
the changes made by the installer. I finally got it all
working, including the wireless. The original installer
never gave my friend the Router login & password (L/I
comcast P/W 1234). What a pain in the ass this whole thing
was.

... as the steps above serve to trick the comcast equipment
into thinking that there is no router in the loop, I think
it very likely that having that bit of information to run by
the Comcast tech would have solved my original problem. If
you have this sort of issue, be sure to ask the Comcast tech
to verify that the type of service is set correctly on their
end.

i do really think it is something on comcast's end. if her
computer can get internet directly from the modem, it makes
me think the two laptops might have been a seperate
configuration issue (which i don't imagine you spent as much
time with them??) do you have another router you can take,
maybe a belkin or something not linsys?

offline elusive from detroit (United States) on 2008-12-21 00:18 [#02260082]
Points: 18368 Status: Lurker | Show recordbag

if the other devices are having trouble reaching the outside
world when plugged directly into the modem (no router in the
picture), then i would suggest issue on ISP end.

did the 2 laptops/whatever even pull a proper/public DHCP
address? did they pull any address at all? if so, could they
ping out? could they resolve DNS?

offline hedphukkerr from mathbotton (United States) on 2008-12-21 06:47 [#02260103]
Points: 8833 Status: Regular

nothing other than the connectible desktop can ping out at
all. you can't even get the little globe on the network icon
to show up indicating you are connected to the internet
(vista).

i'll try it with a belkin i have laying around, but it's a
piece of shit which got struck my lightning so i don't know
how accurate of a diagnostic tool it will be. hopefully
comcast will be able to fix this if they get there before i
do.

we need more info than that
do you know how to open a command window / perform "ipconfig
/all" command?

we need to know if thos devices pull a public/DHCP address
from your isp.

you can't do anything unless you have a public ip address,
so no point troubleshooting past that.

offline tragedy from Gloucester (United States) on 2008-12-24 08:22 [#02260627]

IT GOT FIXED!
It was my comcast modem.... since my desktop computer still
worked, the comcast people didn't think that would be it,
but i kept asking them to replace it...they did, and here I
am, wireless on my laptop.
Comcast can still kick my ass tho. I hate them.
Thanks elusive and hedphukkerr for trying to help.
