First of all, let me start by saying HOLY FUCKING SHIT THANK YOU to bit bare for inadvertently showing me Philip Glass.
I attained a few of his albums with the aid of the internets today, and I must say... I fucking love this man. Everything that I've heard of him is structurally similar to the type of music I compose in my head while I'm at work (doing repetitive, mundane tasks).
So far I've listened to Glassworks, Music With Changing Parts, & Music in Twelve Parts. I can't find a song I don't thoroughly enjoy listening to and focusing my thoughts on!
He is absolutely brilliant!

this is good, and relevant i like koyaanisqatski and i like him in general. though everything sounds too much the same. like always that 3+3+2+2 rhythm and the million soundtracks: i'm not overjoyed when i'm in the theater and recognize yet again his sound

he certainly has found a market for himself churning out reiterations of his style, which is a shame, because most people don't see in him an innovator

It's difficult for me not to see him as innovative. :s
His music is obviously very repetitive structurally, but I find it quite interesting to sit and concentrate on the subtle changes in the music. There are lots of time signature changes, and changes in the patterns as well. Very interesting stuff!

how can anything be overrated anyway? overrated to you maybe yes?
glass has his own way of arranging and composing, a lot of fast staccatos and the like, you either like it or you dont.
i like some of the moods he have, but not everything. im not sure whos overrating him, but if they are thats their choice, and your opinion is worth no more than theirs.
as far as radiohead goes, they have some brilliant melodies and riffs, and the sound is good, specially on ok computer and the bends..
thom yorke has a lot of emotion in his music, ironically enough i didnt find much emotion on the eraser though.

My judgment of Glass being overrated stems from the common belief that the man did something innovative/challenging with his compositions. I refuse to believe that he is a minimalist composing master when folks like Terry Riley, John Adams, Steve Reich, and even Brian Eno struggle for the same recognition with not nearly the equal amount of respect. Not that respect matters at all, but Glass pretty much "stole" their concepts without adding anything unique of his own to the table.
My thing about Radiohead is just out of complete puzzlement - they sound like a very average rock band to me. But, they've been made out to be the next Beatles... but I can't tell what they've done compositionally or on the production side of things that would suggest this. No hostility intended with my comments, either way...

I think the man did something very innovative with his compositions. To say that he stole concepts from people like Reich and Riley is ridiculous. Glass is more of just taking one melody line and arranging it in as many ways as he can. In his earlier work, he uses a great deal of time signature changes in addition rhythmic & structural change.
Many other minimalist classical composers also use the same idea of basing an entire piece off one main melody, though each utilizes their own techniques & ideas. For example, Reich is known for his use of phasing in a great deal of his work.

Reich's last use of phasing was on Piano Phase from 1971 btw.. His sixth work.
TroutMask, just want to comment on the radiohead thing. Radiohead may be a pretty normal rock band, on the surface..
But if you dig deeper you realize the innovative and emotional nature of their albums.
Many songs I presume Thom have written, really do have outstanding harmonies and melodies, and the way they mix electronic instruments in isn't normal for a rock band (at least not back then)
I think the album OK Computer really is outstanding in most tracks, and I feel it does deserve the recognition it has gotten, maybe not BEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME, but certainly it deserves mention..

It's true that Philip Glass made it big, in a way that the earlier minimalists didn't, but sometimes life's not fair. And besides, being willing to work with different producers, for Hollywood and TV, and with rock musicians has been a wise step for Glass. You can't really expect people to know about Riley with the sort of laid-back art house avant garde attitude that he's coming from. And isn't that the point of avant garde - not being famous? :)
Reich and Glass were buddies in New York, and undoubtedly they influenced each other, but this is no secret. Also, the influences went both ways.
I think Glass hasn't done anything all that new or innovative since the 70's, and I think that's a conscious choice. He's milking his style for all it's worth. But his early and mid-period stuff is still pretty cool, and certainly contains elements that are not found in La Monte Young, Terry Riley or Steve Reich, like the re-invention of the opera form and a focus on a specific type of string/wind/keyboard ensemble.
